🌍𝗖𝗘𝗧𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮! On 22 October, the European Commission published a new Communication on the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA). We are pleased to see that the CETPartnership is recognised as a key contributor to cross-border and cross-sectoral research, facilitating the development and uptake of clean energy technologies. 💡 The new Communication assesses the progress made since 2020, while highlighting future efforts needed to establish a more integrated, efficient, and inclusive research and innovation system across the EU. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 A key strategic goal of the ERA is to strengthen research excellence! While research excellence exists throughout Europe, its full potential remains largely untapped, partly due to a lack of coordination and alignment in research and innovation (R&I) investment agendas at both EU and national levels. In the European energy technologies sector, the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (#SETPlan) has made significant strides toward achieving this alignment, enabling the European Commission and member states to develop joint R&I agendas. CETPartnership plays a pivotal role in driving the implementation of the SET Plan in Europe’s energy technology sector. Its work aims to succeed in achieving the SET Plan's goals, ensuring that research advancements translate into real economic and sustainable energy impacts across Europe. 🚀 Overcoming Barriers: Enhancing Research Infrastructure Capacity for Mission-Oriented Innovation in LAC Countries 🌍 Research Infrastructures are at the heart of the transition from traditional innovation policies to mission-oriented approaches that deliver long-term societal benefits. However, barriers such as resource constraints, fragmented collaboration channels, and governance complexities stand in the way of a meaningful engagement in mission-oriented innovation. Our upcoming workshop, part of the Horizon Europe EU-LAC ResInfra Plus project, is a must-attend for policymakers, representatives of Research Infrastructures, and innovation policy researchers across the EU and LAC regions. Together, we will: 🎯 Identify barriers: explore the challenges faced by Research Infrastructures in adopting mission-oriented innovation frameworks 📈 Benchmark best practices: learn from insights gathered from policy and science experts 🤝 Co-create solutions: join a focused discussion on strategies to enhance institutional capacity, foster ecosystem development, and strengthen policy influence. 📅 26.11.2024 | 15:00 CET | Register for the workshop: https://lnkd.in/dzaF7ARP EU-LAC ResInfra Plus GT de Infraestructuras de Investigación CELAC Red LAC NCP #MissionOrientedInnovation #ResearchInfrastructures #HorizonEurope #ResInfraPlus #LACInnovation #GlobalCollaboration #PolicyForImpact #InnovationEcosystem #SustainabilityLeadership #ResearchImpact

📈 Scaling innovations in the public sector is often considered a big challenge. Together with Albert Meijer Rik Braams and Paul Meijer, I designed a practical tool with which public sector employees can plan and reflect on scaling innovations. 💡 Our main take-aways for the public sector: - Take into account that scaling is a context-specific and iterative process. - Use the tool together with your scaling team to develop a scaling pathway for your innovation. - Reconsider this scaling pathway along the way, as scaling trajectories are volatile. Proud to publish my first journal article in Science and Public Policy! Interested in the tool? Who is the client in megaprojects? Back to Norway to present at the Concept Symposium, hosted by the Norwegian Ministry of Finance. Clarity of roles and responsibilities is a challenge for #infrastructure delivery around the world. What is the role of the sponsor? How does it evolve over time? Should sponsors have delivery capability? We need to talk about the capabilities (and accountability) of clients AND sponsors. ✅ The client might have the right capabilities (or not!), but the sponsor plays an influential role, which is often less discussed. We might have situations where there is a capable client to deliver the project, but external factors (#politics?) contribute to significantly delay the utilisation of such capabilities. Should the client be the only actor responsible? ✅ How should we explore responsibilities in decision making, who asks for scope changes and when (Hi elections!), and who is tracking the decisions vs. consequences? Do we need to explore mechanisms to shield major #infrastructure projects from political decisions and focus on technical reasons and outcomes at multiple levels (city, region, country, system of systems)? I look forward to excellent discussions this week in Oslo! UCL's Megaproject Delivery Centre. A recent feature in the German newspaper Die Rheinpfalz highlights how the HEATWISE project and Empa’s NEST research building are transforming waste heat into a valuable resource to drive energy efficiency and sustainability. 📍 Key Highlights: ✨ At the NEST building, a liquid cooling system developed by ZutaCore captures up to 70% of server waste heat, heating water to 70°C for showers and other uses. ✨ Air cooling systems and heat exchangers ensure remaining waste heat is repurposed effectively, with IT systems carefully insulated to optimize energy retention. ✨ Even body heat from building occupants, such as those exercising in fitness areas, contributes to the heat balance, allowing technical heating to adjust and save energy. The aim of testing these technologies is to demonstrate how we can reduce operational costs, minimize greenhouse gas emissions, and increase energy efficiency in data centers and buildings. Lower Saxony – Scotland Joint Forum 2024: The Jubilee Edition DAY I: PANEL DISCUSSIONS The first day of the Joint Forum 2024 will be dedicated to two panel discussions focusing on two different aspects of the future of international efforts to address interdisciplinary transformations in academia, industry and global society. Panel I: “Energy and Beyond: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Lower Saxonian and Scottish Energy Transformation” Climate change, renewable energy and engineering are all aspects of the transformation of the global energy landscape. However, in order to fully understand the potential and challenges associated with this topic, it is necessary to examine it from different perspectives and with different focal points. Renowned experts in the field of energy transitions in Lower Saxony and Scotland - including Professor Claudia Kemfert - will discuss the following factors influencing energy transitions in both regions and beyond: - Technology - Law - Economic policy - Social science - Sectoral integration. This panel will be moderated by Professor Gioia Falcone from University of Glasgow, and it will take the form of an interdisciplinary discourse focused on understanding the dynamics at play in the transition from conventional to renewable energy sources, as well as a wide range of social and environmental implications of these shifts. Moreover, it will be an extension and continuation of the open conversation initiated during the Joint Forum 2022, which led participants and speakers to jointly develop the White Paper “Energizing Democratic Partnerships – Securing Electricity from Democratic Friends”.
