The global natural gas market is witnessing a significant strategic shift in Europe, particularly in the Southeast, Eastern, and Central regions, through the development of the Vertical Gas Corridor project. This infrastructure initiative, backed by nine gas transmission system operators and supported by the EU, represents a crucial step in diversifying gas supplies away from Russian sources, with US LNG positioned to play a central role. The project's timing is particularly significant as it coincides with the potential cessation of Russian gas flows to the region by the end of 2024, demonstrating Europe's commitment to energy security and supply diversification. The EU's current strong position in terms of gas supply stability is evidenced by storage levels exceeding 95% fullness, surpassing the target of 90% by November 1st, as confirmed by EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson. #energy #naturalgas #europe

Central and Southeast Europe face the challenge of diversifying gas supply sources amidst uncertainty about future Russian gas transit. ICGB and Greek TSO DESFA have signed an interconnection agreement at the Komotini IP, enabling gas transport from Greece's new FSRU terminal in Alexandroupolis through the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB). This agreement establishes a new gas supply route, increasing energy security and supply options for the region, with the potential to expand IGB's capacity. Companies should explore capacity booking opportunities in the upcoming October auctions to secure access to this strategic gas route for Central and Southeast Europe. How are you going to use this new route? Lets discuss! #CEE #gas #ICIS

European Commission sets intermediate gas storage filling targets for 2025 to ensure secure supplies and market stability The implementing regulation defines targets for 1 February, 1 May, 1 July and 1 September 2025 for those EU countries with underground storage facilities on their territory and for EU countries that are connected through the gas network. These targets are the minimum thresholds that EU countries need to meet to ensure security of supply through refilled storage facilities for winter 2025-2026. https://lnkd.in/dqprHkJP #EU #gas #storage #underground #targets #energysecurity European Commission

Some recently published NW European natural gas storage capacity & withdrawal data - Ireland & the UK effectively operate as a single gas market and the lack of storage capacity (zero in Ireland following the abandonment of the SW Kinsale gas storage facility in 2017) together with the high withdrawal rates are notable! With windfall taxes and exploration bans likely to significantly impact future domestic NW European gas production together with increased global LNG competition, large scale underground molecular storage looks to be the critical instrument to help deliver an affordable transition by underpinning back-up CGGT fleets whilst also providing security against potential energy nationalism. And let's hope it warms up soon.....

♨ The Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (Acer) considers ENTSOG's assessment of gas supply security in the #EU to be good, but also in need of improvement. 👉 The European Association of Transmission System Operators for Gas presented its Summer Supply Outlook 2024 in mid-April and gave a positive assessment of the readiness to meet demand and fill storage facilities. According to the EU regulation on gas storage, which was approved in summer 2022, the 160 European underground storage facilities in the 18 EU countries that have them must be 90 per cent full by 1 October 2024. According to Entsog, this will be the case. #LNG #Gas #Storage https://lnkd.in/egYTUvTw
