Dubai floods: cloud seeding or climate change? "When conditions are perfect for really heavy rain, there's more moisture in the air, so it rains harder. This extra moisture is because the air is warmer, which is because of human-caused climate change." Gabi Hegerl, a climatologist at Edinburgh University, said that extreme rainfall, like in the UAE and Oman, was likely to get worse in many places due to the effects of climate change. https://lnkd.in/g8GaCuJm #flood #cloudseeding #climatechange

Floods in regions like Dubai and Saudi Arabia can occur due to various reasons such as heavy rainfall, tropical storms, or flash floods caused by sudden intense precipitation. Climate change may also play a role in altering weather patterns and increasing the frequency or intensity of such events. As climate change progresses, it can lead to shifts in weather patterns, including more intense rainfall events in some areas. This increased precipitation can contribute to flooding, even in typically arid regions like the Middle East. Additionally, rising sea levels due to global warming can exacerbate the impacts of coastal flooding in low-lying areas. https://lnkd.in/gvrC6fMu #ClimateAction #GlobalWarming #MiddleEastFlooding #ExtremeWeather

The recent Western Disturbance (WD) that affected Afghanistan, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman from April 12th to 16th stands out in my memory of the last 40 years as a weather forecaster and meteorologist. This particular WD, impacting the mentioned regions during this period, unleashed unprecedented havoc resembling that of a cyclone. The toll has been significant, with more than 130 reported fatalities and property damage amounting to billions of US dollars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and UAE. The question arises: is climate change playing a role in such destructive events? The magnitude of the damage caused demands a comprehensive study, encompassing various meteorological aspects such as Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), synoptic analysis, dynamics, and physical processes. Meteorologists must delve into the underlying causes to understand the unprecedented nature of this event. The devastation inflicted by this WD, particularly in Dubai, and its implications for weather systems worldwide suggest that mere adaptation measures may not suffice, even for developed regions. The ultimate solution lies in combating climate change through the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale. While discussions on artificial rain have surfaced, it appears unlikely to be the cause of such extreme weather phenomena. Rather, climate change appears to exacerbate these events, leading to their heightened intensity and frequency. Let us intensify our efforts in the fight against climate change. If anyone recalls or has records of similar intense systems during winters or the pre-monsoon season, please share your insights. Additionally, a video from WRAL News depicts the inundation of Dubai under two feet of water within hours of heavy rainfall (140mm), equivalent to its annual rainfall, highlighting the severity of the situation. Devastating news from the Everest region. 🏔️😢 Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are wreaking havoc on Nepal's Thame, Solukhumbu district. This fragile ecosystem, home to the world's highest peaks, is under severe threat due to climate change. Increased glacial melt is triggering catastrophic floods, displacing over 135 people. 💔 It's time for urgent action. We must support Nepal in monitoring and containing these smaller glacial lakes and addressing the root cause - climate change. #Nepal #Everest #ClimateCrisis #GLOF #DisasterRelief #HumanitarianCrisis https://flip.it/x74DNr

Dubai received an unusual amount of rainfall this week. The rain broke records for the last 75 years in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is one of the hottest and driest regions of the world. Heavy rains are unusual in the UAE. Then, the question arises what caused torrential rains & flash floods? Many reports attributed the floods to cloud seeding, a process that refers to implanting chemicals into clouds to increase rainfall. However, the UAE government denied seeding clouds before the Dubai floods. Then what exactly was the reason for flash floods? As per the UN: Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. https://lnkd.in/eMi9wrMa #climatecrisis #flooding #dubai

Let’s all come to terms with the sad reality that the world will eventually represent Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 because human behavior around consumption, waste, and pollution will be extremely challenging to change. RCP 8.5 refers to the concentration of carbon that delivers global warming at an average of 8.5 watts per square meter across the planet. The RCP 8.5 pathway delivers a temperature increase of about 4.3˚C by 2100, relative to pre-industrial temperatures. Keeping the above in mind, cities all over the world must be prepared for extreme weather events. It involves the following steps: 1. Access to credible extreme weather forecasts as many days out from the event itself, meaning the existing models must be continually optimized with new / different atmospheric and ground-based observations. This also means that models need to be trained with actuals from events like the Dubai flooding to gradually learn how to predict such heavy precipitation and flooding. 2. Analysis of risk and danger based on forecast outputs. This is the hard part, as human bias can impede the urgent efforts necessary to protect communities. 3. Communication of risk and danger to residents and visitors based on the analysis. This involves high levels of alignment, coordination, and consistency between all bodies from EMS, schools, banks, airports, etc. It was surprising that people in Dubai were going about their own day, even after an extreme weather warning was issued. 4. Evacuation protocols - It is important that residents and visitors can have time to get out of harm’s way, which is why having extreme weather forecast models one week out is absolutely critical. Building additional infrastructure for climate change resiliency, such as an intricate system of drains and basins, is counterproductive. Cities will be resilient against climate change when they are prepared for it. We still have our work cut out for us to achieve that level of preparation.
