Investing in People at Place: The Key to Sustainable Ecosystem Restoration in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Page 5 in the Guardian last week The recent recognition of the Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust as a finalist for the 2024 Ministry of Primary Industries BioHeritage Challenge Community Award is a testament to the crucial role that community-led initiatives play in protecting and restoring the biodiversity of Aotearoa, New Zealand. It highlights the value of local knowledge and community connections in safeguarding ecosystems. The Trust's holistic approach to ecosystem restoration, including pest control, native plant propagation, predator trapping, restoration planting, and scientific research, showcases the impactful contributions of grassroots efforts to conservation. However, the sustainability of relying solely on volunteers for this work is a concern, emphasizing the need for adequate funding support. Investing in community groups like the Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust empowers them to continue their essential conservation work for the benefit of future generations. The Trust's 50-year strategy exemplifies the dedication and vision of local communities in preserving Aotearoa's biodiversity. It is crucial to recognize that sustainable ecosystem protection requires more than volunteer efforts and to prioritize supporting community-led initiatives with the necessary resources. The success of the Trust serves as an inspiring example for other communities in Aotearoa to follow suit.

Have you seen this latest report? We must halt #Nature decline. Personally, I'm backing the call for a #LivingPlanetAct to create joined-up thinking and action, and attract investment, to stabilise our climate, restore Nature in all places and provide affordable, healthy food for all: #Naturefirst #Naturepositive #Haltnaturedecline #Natureactionnow
Communicating the really distressing and scary facts about the state of our planet is difficult for all of us on a personal level – working on this for months on end, and trying to land the importance of the message whilst finding opportunities for hope is a constant challenge. So we're incredibly proud to see this go out today and land absolutely everywhere both here in the UK and around the world. With two major launches in less than a week of each other, it’s been a super busy period for the whole team who have delivered with absolute world-class comms. Huge shout out to Kellie Rollings for leading the charge, and to our absolutely awesome media team led by Barney Guiton who have worked tirelessly against an incredibly challenging news cycle to land this crucially important message. And if you do want to take an action to help change the trajectory we're on - please do support our call for an innovative new law to stabilise our climate, restore nature and produce affordable, healthy food for everyone: https://lnkd.in/e8ZHqwaE Kerry Davies Helen Spinney Natalie Corp Victoria Pearce Kate Marx John Parry

"Explore stories about threats facing our natural environment, and the people taking action to care for it." Very humbled to be one of only 23 stories about people and organizations in Victoria taking action for biodiversity conservation, chosen for the Victorian State of the Environment website. The story of my invention - the #BandicootMotel - is now available to read on the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability website. I invented #BandicootMotels to solve a wicked problem that impacts just about every land manager in Australia. They have the smaller terrestrial biodiversity but also the introduced predators, the threats of wild fire, the increased weather temperature fluctuations, and a lack of time/ability/$ to address all of them all the time everywhere. #BandicootMotels were invented to help solve the problem of how to provide predator refuge for Southern Brown Bandicoots in a small Parks Victoria reserve at St Helens, Victoria. (ask Hon John Pandazopoulos - he has seen them in the site) For that population to increase they have to have more places to go to avoid predators. Its predators that are the biggest limiter on recovery of populations of Southern Brown Bandicoots. They can and do live on farmed land, urban land, industrial land, and plantation forests - IF they can find refuges from cats, foxes, dogs, and raptors. Ten were installed and left to acclimatize in the reserve with the ecology. Many now have moss growing on them. Thirty more are in the wider Moyne area. If a wildfire ever comes to those sites, there are places the wildlife know of that will help them avoid that fire. Pre-fire resilience actions that will survive a fire. I believe this is the way - before, not after a fire. But I also designed them to be able to be added quickly to #fire impacted places so that surviving species would have an increased chance of avoiding the #predators and thermal stress that comes with #exposure. Much of the bush-fire conservation recovery money is thrown out AFTER fires isn't it. #BandicootMotels are made for placement for years with NO maintenance. They don't #burn. They don't rot. They are strong. A fully grown Eastern Grey Kangaroo (80+ kg) can land on the top without damaging the motel or the kangaroo. They don't pollute with wire, shade cloth, star pickets, or nails that become a future hazard to wildlife, #emergency staff & vehicles, volunteers, and land owners. The place for the #BandicootMotel as long term predator, climate, and emergency #refuge for multiple species across Australia is established. I am absolutely pumped by that. Want Bandicoot Motels at your place? Im open to work with you. VicTrack V/Line VicRoads Landcare Victoria Inc. In this Voice from the Great Lakes, Mike Shriberg writes about the emerging challenges facing the Great Lakes, and the unity of purpose required to meet the moment. Read more below or at nemw.org!
The Great Lakes are Great Uniters - The question now is whether that unity can guide us through the great disruptions to create new, stronger policies and institutions. Thank you Northeast-Midwest Institute for encouraging me to express this viewpoint in my "Voices from the Great Lakes" piece.
