The current industrial food system is maladapted and is stuck in unfounded beliefs about technology and free markets. A bottom-up alternative is emerging: "Across the continent, farmers and citizens are experimenting with new rules and practices on their fields, gardens and markets, and within their communities: community-supported agriculture (CSA), agroecology, alternative food networks, food collectives, just to name a few. They work together based on shared social, ecological and democratic values that shape very different narratives about agriculture and food. These are stories centered around ecology, social reciprocity and solidarity, food sovereignty, working with nature, and livelihood security. They are diverse, as they embrace their local embeddedness and identity."
According to Bram van Helvoirt local food systems are pivotal in a transformation towards more healthy, more democratic and more sustainable food: https://lnkd.in/eQAC2_CN

Check out this great work by Anna Hammond and the team at Matriark Foods! Read the case study to learn how upcycled products can reduce food waste and support organizations' climate goals. #impactcommunications #stopfoodwaste #earthmonth
As part of Google’s commitment to reduce food loss and waste (https://lnkd.in/d4_aU87q), we’ve been testing and iterating opportunities to procure climate-friendly products. This includes using upcycled food surplus and byproducts to avoid food being sent to landfills while also creating additional markets for growers and producers. Take a look at some of the learnings from an 18-month pilot with Matriark Foods (led by Anna Hammond) which involved co-developing ways to scale upcycled products from farm surplus. Join in the journey to drive impact for good at scale. How Eating Farm-To-Table Helps The Environment Photo: Getty Images When it comes to energy and water consumption, eating locally could be one of the biggest steps in reducing the agriculture industry’s impact on the environment. The idea of “farm-to-table” formed as a social movement promoting food consumption from local farmers and producers in an effort to reduce food waste and costs of food travel. The goal of farm-to-table is to consume food as close to where it was produced. “Farm-to-table” picked up national traction in the 1970s with the opening of Chez Panisse, a Berkeley-based French restaurant that built up a network of local farmers and ranchers for its food sourcing. Since then, the food production model is associated with a sustainability-focused approach to agriculture and gastronomy. Read on at https://lnkd.in/ee9Ve8dQ
