This event featured a #CarbonCredits panel with Sander Reuderink ☕️🌍 of ESA BIC alumnus Carble in conversation with Mila Luleva of Rabobank Acorn. & another ESA BIC alumnus' CEO, Vikram Sarbajna of Agtuall, was also present at this event. Why not take a moment to watch the 3-minute aftermovie? It provides inspiration for thinking about how can space technology, geodata and digital technologies help improve smallholder livelihoods by more sustainable agriculture practices and improved access to finance. In the video, you'll hear from Anna Ignatiadi of Rabo Foundation commenting: "We are really looking to technology to increase the impact we can have and reach more people" with Joanna Ruiter of NSO adding: "We need to continue the conversations that we have started to continue developing the pilots that are already there, scale them up and bring them to other countries, crops and farmers so that more people can benefit from these services." The conclusions of that event (as outlined in this NSO post: https://lnkd.in/gug5gnFw) were that: the opportunities are abundant, we are on the right track and there is a long way to go." Which is where the ESA Business Incubation Centre Noordwijk comes in. In this programme, startups are helped to develop innovative solutions that can use space data to benefit life on Earth. Two recent graduates focused on this area during incubation: 🛰 Carble uses impact technology that helps buyers of tropical commodities – like coffee and cacao – measure, model and mitigate their carbon footprint by leveraging remote-sensing data to reward farmers for storing carbon in their agroforestry farms. 🛰 Agtuall uses Earth observation data to support parametric insurance products: de-risking smallholder farmers by increasing their access to finance. The startup collaborates with non-profits, such as Rabo Foundation, to deliver affordable solutions for small-scale farmers and cooperatives. 🛰 ❓ What innovation utilising satellite data will be selected for incubation next, benefiting from €60K non-equity funding and business/technical support? Two of the important points raised in the latest Food, Farming and Countryside Commission symposium report: 1. Regenerate local food infrastructure 2.Reduce food inequalities among households and families by increasing access to freshly cooked food in and out of the home and helping reduce waste. 📚 New working paper: From Food Security to Food Resilience While food security has surged up the UK political agenda, it’s becoming clear in a volatile, climate-affected world, the UK’s food supply will only be secure if we make it more resilient. In March 2024, the third symposium convened by FFCC’s Farming Leadership group brought together farmers, policymakers, academics and politicians to explore the barriers and opportunities involved in developing resilience. This working paper summarises the discussions that took place and the themes that emerged. Read 👇 https://lnkd.in/eJErFs3v

Critical systems thinking (CST) offers a fascinating way to reframe our understanding of complex issues. Systems vary in size—large and small—and in their interactions, which may be either independent or interconnected. For strategic decision-makers, adopting a helicopter view is essential to gaining a holistic view, as focusing too closely on details can obscure the bigger picture (see the forest for the tree). This research applies CST to food security, a challenge characterized by its complex connection between various factors and actors. https://lnkd.in/gHGQJpq3 Enjoy reading.

Trust in science. Humankind has forever manipulated the genome of the plants it feeds on. For thousands of years this was done in a rather crude way of breading and crossbreading. Now, we have safe means of doing that in a more targeted way to gain speed in light of the many challenges that we face with soon 10 bn people on this planet. 🌾 37 Nobel laureates and more than 1,500 scientists signed a letter urging EU lawmakers to support New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) to revolutionize agriculture. 🚀 NGTs promise climate-resilient and disease-resistant crops, reduced pesticides, and higher yields, aligning with top health and safety standards. 🌱 Unlocking the potential of NGTs means unlocking a sustainable future with better food security and health. 🌍 Read the letter⬇️

A report released last week by the Global Commission on the Economics of Water reveals that for the first time in human history, the hydrological cycle is out of balance. The implication: A future facing severe water scarcity challenges. The Commission’s analysis also shows that nearly 3 billion people and over half of the world's food production is located in regions where total water storage is expected to decrease. Find the interactive report here: https://lnkd.in/g_K7Zc5J 🔍 Interested in learning more about the future of food systems under water stress?
