📚 New working paper: From Food Security to Food Resilience While food security has surged up the UK political agenda, it’s becoming clear in a volatile, climate-affected world, the UK’s food supply will only be secure if we make it more resilient. In March 2024, the third symposium convened by FFCC’s Farming Leadership group brought together farmers, policymakers, academics and politicians to explore the barriers and opportunities involved in developing resilience. We wanted to share the 'Discussion Paper on Indigenous Food Sovereignty' that was commissioned by the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Food on behalf of the B.C. Indigenous Advisory Council on Agriculture and Food (IACAF) and prepared by Tea Creek. In this paper, you will learn what Indigenous Food Sovereignty is and why supporting Indigenous Food Sovereignty supports reconciliation, enhancing food security, offsetting the cumulative impacts of colonization and fighting climate change. Tomorrow is World Food Day, a reminder of the importance of food security. In my view, the key to achieving lasting food security lies in strong collaboration between public and private stakeholders, coupled with improved agricultural finance policies to support the entire food ecosystem. Recently, at the Alameda Institute, we co-published a dossier on food sovereignty in partnership with the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung-Southern Africa. The dossier includes articles by a handful of authors, including myself and Alameda research associate Raj Patel. One of our objectives was to further intervene in debates on the global food crises that seem stuck on the narrow view of food security measures and simply weathering the shocks of a polycrisis. Our point is that we need an internationalist strategy that unites objectives to end hunger with land reform, workers' struggles, agroecology, the decommodification of food and, of course, a just socioecological transition. They feel hoodwinked by the fact that so much of the food on shelves is ultra-processed and unhealthy – and they want government to step in to ensure the health of people and planet comes before private profit.
