Join our workshop tomorrow on climate assemblies commissioned by civil society: a new trajectory? 🗓 Wed, April 10, 2024  ⏰ 15:00-17:00 (CET)  📍 Online What is behind the emerging trend of climate assemblies commissioned by civil society organisations? Do they face different challenges from the more familiar assemblies commissioned by governments? In recent years we have seen a rise in assemblies on climate and ecological issues commissioned by civil society organisations. Examples include the German Bürgerrat Klima, Citizens’ Assembly on Energy Costs in Poland, the People’s Assembly on Nature in the UK, the Climate Assembly in Skopje and the Global Assembly. And a civil society coalition has announced its intention of commissioning an assembly to consider Norway’s growing oil and gas wealth in times of climate crisis, and the responsibilities, risks and opportunities that Norway’s common resources brings with them. In this workshop, we will reflect on the challenges and opportunities of commissioning assemblies within civil society, with a particular focus on competing objectives and how civil society commissioners deal with questions of integrity in remit, governance and impact pathways. 💬 Over the last two days, we had the opportunity to take part in the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) Networking Conference 2024 in Berlin. We shared insights on key elements of the energy transition in central and eastern Europe, such as the importance of setting a clear vision, anticipating investment needs, ensuring a fair and equitable transition, and increasing public participation. 🗣 Our senior EU policy officer, Christophe Jost, took the stage to shed light on crucial issues surrounding the 2040 climate targets and the urgent need for concentrating efforts in central and eastern Europe. 💡 We discussed the pivotal role of the central and eastern European region in achieving the EU’s climate and energy targets, and emphasised the urgency of moving away from investments in fossil fuels and other false solutions. The debate underlined the need for a strategic shift towards sustainable energy solutions capable of effectively tackling climate change. ☘ Many thanks to #EUKI for inviting us to participate as panellists and for giving us a platform to amplify these critical issues. ⭐️ Whoever comes are the right people. But... what if no one shows up?! ⭐️ It was a pleasure to facilitate the first community meet-up for the Climate Peace and Justice Community at The Hague Humanity Hub! With around 40 participants, we used the Open Space Technology methodology for facilitation. It's based on four simple principles and one law that are incredibly powerful outside of workshops too: ✅ Whoever comes are the right people ✅ It starts when it starts ✅ It's over when it's over ✅ Whatever happens is the only thing that could have ⭐️ The Law of Two Feet ⭐️: if you're not learning or contributing, move to where you can be more useful or gain something valuable. These core rules for Open Space Technology are invaluable when kick-starting work on purpose-driven causes: ➡️ In short: Start with whoever is available, whenever you can, and take it from there. Below ⬇️ is a picture of one group during our meet-up where no one showed up, and it was perfectly fine: there were nine other groups that thrived and generated fantastic outcomes. Many people long for a more holistic lifestyle in peace with less negative impact on people and planet. What gets in the way is often profit, penis and power, as Sandrine Dixson-Declève put it. There is hope though, when we come together like in the ESDN - European Sustainable Development Network to listen and learn from eachother about political measures that can transform our norms, behavior and societies. The single ticket for all public transport in Austria, for example. And the Commissioner for the Wellbeing of Future Generations in Wales. Next up is the annual SDG forum at the UN in July and the launch of the first ever Nordic VSR. A report made as a collaborative effort with the Nordic Local and Regional Government Associations to share the progress and potholes that Nordic municipalities encounter on their path towards greener and more inclusive communities. And why youth and civil society, local businesses and researchers need to be partners in the transition. Because it’s all about local vision and action. We will soon be able to give you information about the REINFORCING third call, but for now, we can anticipate the topic: EU Missions! That expression refers to several challenges the European Commission wants to face by 2030. There are five of them: Adaptation to Climate Change, Cancer, Restore our Ocean and Waters, 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, and a Soil Deal for Europe. For example, about the third mission, you can read a February 2024 document (https://lnkd.in/dqsyvQJ6) that lists selected cities and highlights the goal to put all European cities in a position to become climate-neutral by 2050. Citizens will be involved in co-creation processes to make cities better places to live in for everyone, with cleaner air, safer streets, and greener spaces.
