New EPA-funded research from the Green and Circular Economy Hub, led by Dr. Michael Johnson and team at the University of Limerick, has been released: Research 466: Forecasting WEEE Arising for Electric Vehicle Batteries and Photovoltaic Panels in Ireland. Globally, energy systems are undergoing two simultaneous and radical transformations that present a new set of challenges in sustainable waste management: the electrification of the transportation network and the decarbonisation of the electricity grid. This research identified challenges and modelled scenarios for the sustainable management of LongWEEE, i.e. electrical devices with a longer than average lifetime, with a specific focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and electric vehicle batteries (EVBs). The research models the quantity of WEEE generated from both sectors out to 2050 and estimates the related cost of recycling. The aim is to help plan for financially sound and sustainable WEEE management into the future. The research also evaluated the merits of both “pay when placed” and “pay when collected” approaches to financing the collection and treatment of such long life products at end of life. As we transition to sustainable energy sources, managing the lifecycle of renewable technology, like solar panels, becomes essential. Did you know that by 2050, waste from solar panels could contribute to 10% of the world's electronic waste? Effective recycling not only protects our environment but also conserves valuable resources. 🌟 Excited to present my latest work on "Solar Panel Recycling" for the Special Topics in Renewable Energy course. This project delves into the critical importance of recycling and waste management. 🏭♻️ Drawing inspiration from SUNY Group, a leading Chinese company specializing in industrial machinery, which plays a pivotal role in this domain with their innovative solar panel recycling technology. Suny Group, Ellie Yang I am grateful to have the opportunity to explore this vital topic. A special thanks to Dr. Yarub Jahmany for his guidance and expertise throughout the course, and to my colleague leena Shurrab for her valuable contribution. #gratitude The presentation emphasizes that contrary to common belief, solar panels are recyclable. Continuous research and innovation are essential for optimizing recycling processes. Collaboration between design and recycling units is crucial for ensuring eco-friendly designs and efficient recycling. #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #WasteManagement #Recycling #SolarPanels #EnvironmentalProtection #Innovation #CleanEnergy #GreenTechnology

🌠 We are pleased to share a significant milestone achieved at our Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland: we’ve reduced the carbon footprint of our Galerie papers range by 55%, which is expected to reach 70% by the end of 2024. This is a key step forward and a major milestone in our sustainability journey. We made significant investments to bring renewable energy and clean electricity to the mill. The knock-on effects, for our own Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been enormous, but the positive effects also support our customers’ own efforts to decrease their emissions. Here’s what Sarah Price, Sappi Europe’s Director of Sustainability has to say: “For us, this is much broader than emissions; it’s about investing now for long-term positive change and enabling our customers to do the same.” #SappiEurope #Sustainability #PaperIndustry

It’s inspiring to see the incredible strides we’re making in Cambridge and Gothenburg towards setting new standards in energy efficiency, renewable power and waste reduction. Our research and development practices are a crucial part of our mission to transform how we’re delivering care. At our Discovery Centre (DISC) in Cambridge, we’re proud to have achieved ‘excellent’ BREEAM certification for the design and construction of the facility, and contributed to achieving our 2026 Ambition Zero Carbon target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 98% from a 2015 baseline. In Gothenburg, our labs operate with 100% renewable electricity and we have reduced Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 99% since 2015. Smart building technologies and source heating systems are just the first steps on the journey to transforming our operations across the entire value chain. We’re setting new standards in environmental sustainability, and I’m proud to be a part of the team that’s committed to delivering better health outcomes with a lower environmental footprint. I recently presented my capstone, "A Review of Current End-of-Life Solar Panel Recycling Systems and Its Many Opportunities," at the Earth and Environmental Science Graduate Research Conference. This comprehensive research paper marks a significant milestone in my Master’s degree in Environmental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. The capstone addresses the pressing global issue of managing the end-of-life phase of first-generation solar PV panels. Despite the exponential growth in solar PV installed capacity, the lack of effective recycling initiatives is a cause for concern. By 2030, a staggering amount of PV panel waste is projected to accumulate globally, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable practices. My report highlights a key finding-recycling these panels could potentially unlock billions worth of materials by 2050. My research is a comprehensive review of the solar panel value chain, existing recycling processes, and policies across regions such as China, the U.S., and the E.U. It also includes a detailed cost analysis of the cost of producing virgin silicon vs. recovering silicon from retired solar panels. The report emphasizes the economic, environmental, and regulatory benefits of recycling end-of-life solar panels, underlining the necessity for collective action in this crucial area. I extend my gratitude to James Hagan, Ph.D., and Reto Gieré, Ph.D., at the University of Pennsylvania for their invaluable guidance and insights throughout my capstone journey. If you're interested in knowing more about my research and findings, I'm happy to share more details. #sustainability #research #recycling #solarenergy #environment #circulareconomy #climatechange #endoflife #wastemanagement #cleanenergy #renewables
