🎥 EPICO’s “Key Takeaways” On 20 and 25 June, EPICO KlimaInnovation hosted two Policy Accelerators on the use of #hydrogen in the #aviation sector. 🛫 Since aviation is currently the fastest-growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, having tripled emissions in the last 30 years, developing a decarbonisation agenda for aviation is a crucial opportunity for the EU & #Germany to lead the sector’s transformation & advance in the energy transition. 👥 During our Policy Accelerators, a small group of selected experts collaborated to identify the challenges and develop concrete measures to support the use of hydrogen in aviation. 📺 What are the key lessons from our Policy Accelerators? Here are the main takeaways from Bastien Bonnet-Cantalloube, Nuala Doyle, Clémence Brodier, Anja Köhne, Marte van der Graaf & Holly Attwell. As the aviation industry considers #hydrogen as a fuel source, the development of supporting infrastructure is in its early stages: - The UK currently lacks large-scale hydrogen delivery infrastructure. - Establishing hydrogen refueling hubs at airports and other necessary infrastructure is crucial for viability. - These steps are essential for enabling zero-emission flights on a broader scale, especially with green hydrogen. At Hybrid Air Vehicles, we’re collaborating with partners like AECOM to explore future hydrogen solutions, including: - Considerations for liquid vs. gas hydrogen - Tank sizes and their placement relative to existing infrastructure - The importance of cross-industry cooperation Want to learn more about hydrogen's role in aviation and what we're doing at HAV? At the aerospace exhibition ILA Berlin this week, the EU Commission's Alliance for Zero-Emission Aviation (AZEA) launched its report “Flying on electricity & hydrogen” – the Alliance’s vision on how to make electric and hydrogen flight a reality. The vision sets the ambitious objective of having up to 68% of intra-EU flights operated by such hydrogen- and electricity-powered aircraft by 2050. According to the Alliance, the total renewable and low-carbon energy required to operate those flights in 2050 (not including the energy required for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel) is estimated up to 198 TWh/y of electricity which would correspond to 2.8% of the gross electricity generation foreseen by 2050. The Alliance estimates that aircraft powered by hydrogen or electricity could reduce aviation CO2 emissions on intra-EU routes by up to 31% in 2050. This has particular relevance and opportunity for sustainable Regional Air Mobility in the EU. The AZEA Vision illustrates the various challenges to make electric and hydrogen flight a reality and the need for collaboration across the aviation ecosystem. It identifies barriers and challenges to be addressed through cohesive actions by the members of the ecosystem. ZE-Aviation Alliance Clg (ZEMAVA) is proud to support the ongoing work of the six Working Groups of the Alliance who are working to make this Vision a reality. Decarbonising aviation will be highly dependent on the availability of vast quantities of competitively priced renewable electricity and green hydrogen as well as investment in enabling infrastructure at airports. #ZEMAVA#Atlantic Green Digital Corridor#Shannon Estuary#green energy #AZEA vision ➡ https://lnkd.in/dhSk4Phz

The official release of AZEA's vision at ILA Berlin is an important milestone. The Alliance will continue to foster collaboration and coordination within the aviation ecosystem. It will develop further actions and issue ecosystem and policy recommendations to fully realise the potential that electricity and hydrogen offer to aviation. The vision has already identified 5 areas where public-private coordination is needed. You can read them under the below link. #azea #hydrogen #zeroemissions

Could hydrogen be the future of sustainable flight? ✈️ Hydrogen-powered planes are a game-changer for reducing aviation’s CO2 emissions. With green hydrogen (produced from water and renewable energy), these aircraft could cut global aviation CO2 emissions by 6% by 2050, according to IATA’s Net Zero Roadmap 📉 A “regional first” strategy sees small regional planes dominating the hydrogen fleet by 2050, accounting for 54% of the fleet and reducing regional CO2 emissions by 53%. Alternative strategies, like a “mid-sized first” approach, show even greater potential for emissions reduction, highlighting the versatility of hydrogen-powered aviation. 👉 Learn more in IATA: #sustainableaviation https://lnkd.in/eBmZEuzn
