📰 Reading recommendation: In a recent article from Candid, Simar Singh, Technical Advisor to the RSRI and Chief Program Officer at RefugePoint, explains how organizations like the RSRI, RefugePoint, and the Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp are working to address critical research gaps and strengthen the available knowledge and evidence on refugee self-reliance programming. By broadening the evidence base to include refugee voices and diverse perspectives, for example, we can better shape effective policies and practices and guide future investments. On Sept. 21 our Council (represented by Dmitri Glinski and Irina Kilimnik) presented our remarks in the discussion at the 'Migration for the Future' multi-stakeholder event on the future of human mobility, international cooperation and sustainable development. This broadly representative forum, one of the many held by international NGOs on the side of the UN Summit of the Future, was co-organized by the NGO Committee on Migration, International Detention Coalition, Pan-African Women's Association, and other partners. The discussion was focused upon the draft Pact for the Future to be adopted at the Summit, including the need for a stronger emphasis on the key migration and refugee issues in the Pact; strengthening international accountability mechanisms; and ensuring that the future of human mobility is grounded in human rights, protecting lives, and effective international cooperation.

How will the EU's New Pact on Migation and Asylum impact the local level - first and foremost cities' and civil society's ability to welcome people who seek protection in the EU? And what can cities now do about it? This is what we explained and discussed in our latest Cities4Refugees webinar, available now here: https://lnkd.in/eXpva9Da But we are also eager to hearing about your assessments - please reach out or comment on this post! Local perspectives were not heard in the development of the New Pact. However, now that it is the member states' turn to translate the Pact into national policies and practices by December 12, we have another window of opportunity to raise our concerns loudly and to demand that cities and civil society have a say in drafting these national implementation plans. But to state the obvious: we have to be fast and we have to be loud, together, if we want to be heard in time. And we hope our event succeeded in making this clear and that it will prompt much-needed action— action that aims for solidarity with those who urgently need us. Please reach out if you want to be connected to one of the speakers or if you're interested in joining forces on this. A big thank you to Eurocities and Katharina Bamberg, who hosted this webinar with us. And an equally big thank you to our speakers Maria Prsa (Munich & International Alliance of Safe Harbours), Niels Tubbing (Eurocities Working Group on Migration and Integration / EU Urban Partnership on the Inclusion of Migrants), Michele LeVoy (Platform for Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), Lefteris Papagiannakis (Greek Council for Refugees), Tiago da Cruz (From the Sea to the City) and MEP Birgit Sippel for analysing the New Pact in detail and sharing their knowledge and assessments - which we should all listen to very carefully - with us.
