Students at Nanyang Technological University Singapore have objected to oil major Exxonmobil backing a "low carbon solutions" lab at their university. They claim that there is a conflict of interest in Exxon funding a climate solutions lab and point to the company's track record in blocking climate action and subverting climate science. "We are extremely doubtful that funding of Singapore’s clean energy transition should be so heavily funded and influenced by one of the most notorious mega oil companies," activist group NTUdivest said. The lab will focus on areas such as carbon capture tech from industry by-products, converting methane into hydrogen and using carbon in concrete. NTUdivest publicly questioned the university on whether the lab’s lower carbon fuels would be accompanied by a reduction in carbon-intensive technologies and products and therefore emissions. NTU told Eco-Business that working with industry would “translate knowledge into solutions that will benefit society by supporting the green energy transition and other areas of sustainability.” ExxonMobil said its role in the lab was to invest “in real solutions that are reducing emissions today.” "Our teams are working to meet local and regional needs for stable supplies of energy and essential products, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions in support of a lower-emission future,” said the firm, which was the last global oil super major to set a net zero target. Activists from the Students for a Fossil Free Future (S4F) movement say that firms such as ExxonMobil, Shell and BP have infiltrated Singapore’s tertiary education system over the years to promote their brands, recruit new talent, and gain social approval. The presence of Big Oil brands on campus restricts academic freedoms and the ability of universities to freely criticise the environmental impact of fossil fuels firms, they say. ExxonMobil’s largest refinery outside of the US is located in Singapore, and the firm wields considerable influence in Singaporean society. The company has sponsored free music concerts at National University of Singapore since the 1980s, and also backed conservation programmes. A report by S4F in October that found that Singapore’s universities have become more entrenched with Big Oil since they started campaigning for a fossil fuel-free education system in 2017. “We’re tired of industry interests helming our public universities,” NTUDivest said. #fossilfueldivestment #universities

IN THE NORTH, NEW ENERGY SECTOR IS THRIVING AND OPPORTUNITIES IN IT ALONG WITH IT ⚡ New Energy Career Event we co-organised took place this time last week. It was a great place for companies and job-seekers, professionals and students to connect. Lively discussions at the business market and inspiring presentations and workshops confirmed that the North of the Netherlands is a hub for developments towards a carbon-free future. It was apparent that a lot of energy knowledge is concentrated in this region! As we heard at the event - sustainable future is being enabled by the research, but it does not end there. It is the cross-section with the business community that can drive the innovations further and turn them into reality. And what we can happily report is that majority of attending companies indicated they have jobs suitable for internatonials. 🌐 👉 Are you looking for a job in the energy sector in the North? Learn more about the landscape of the sector and jobs in it: https://lnkd.in/dAQj7CYv 🙌 Big thanks to New Energy Coalition, Stichting OTP, Hanze, Career Services University of Groningen and all the speakers and attending businesses for making this event happen. #newenergycareerevent #newenergycareerevent24

As part of Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Smart Cities and Communities (SMACCs), my teammates and I recently took on an exciting challenge: conducting an Energy Audit for a high school in Pamplona, Navarra, Spain. What started as a technical project quickly became a meaningful lesson in how small, intentional changes can lead to big impacts—both financially and environmentally. 🔑 What We Discovered: The school relies heavily on natural gas for heating, contributing to high energy costs and significant CO2 emissions. Annual energy use included 96,686 kWh of electricity and 608,877.71 kWh of natural gas—with plenty of room for improvement. 💡 What We Proposed: integrating LED lighting and renewable energy systems, our recommendations focus on reducing costs, improving efficiency, and lowering emissions. 🌿 Why This Matters: This project wasn’t just about numbers—it’s about creating a blueprint for how buildings can become more sustainable. It was inspiring to realize how much we can contribute to a greener future through our work. A huge thank you to our teacher Jon Terés-Zubiaga for their invaluable guidance throughout this project, and to my amazing teammates, Bibek Himalaya, Nadim Ahmed for their hard work, insights, and collaboration. Projects like this remind me why I’m passionate about energy engineering and sustainability. Let’s keep pushing boundaries and finding solutions for a better tomorrow! 🌍 #ErasmusMundus #EnergyAudit #Sustainability #Teamwork #EngineeringForGood
