Meet Deepa Lama, Co-founder and President of Kalpavaatika Society Nepal, who is championing urban sustainability by transforming kitchen waste into compost and using rooftops for farming in Kathmandu. Her project, “Enhancing Urban Sustainability through Nature-based Solutions,” empowers over 500 community members to address waste management and food security challenges by composting organic waste and cultivating rooftop gardens. Impact: ▶️ Trained 500 participants in composting, reducing landfill waste and emissions. ▶️ Converted unused rooftop spaces into green areas, mitigating the urban heat island effect and supporting urban biodiversity. ▶️ Distributed 300 grafted fruit plants, enabling households to grow fresh produce on their rooftops. Deepa says: “Never stop believing in yourself and your ideas. Every city has their own set of environmental problems and if you think your idea is what your city needs right now then just go for it…Most of the time we neglect the simple solution that’s in front of us.” Discover Deepa’s story: https://lnkd.in/gprfb5Hi #COP29ImpactMakers

📢 Spotlight on SDG 14: Ecofriendly Mangrove Nursery in India 📢 Mangrove plants are vital for protecting coastal communities from natural disasters, while also supporting biodiversity and preventing erosion. The Thanjavur District Collector in collaboration with the District Forest Office and OMCAR Foundation initiated an eco-friendly mangrove nursery project in #India. 🌱 Key Initiative: This initiative involved growing 13,000 mangrove seedlings using biodegradable nursery bags made from Palmyra leaves, as opposed to the conventional plastic bags. The use of Palmyra leaves not only prevents plastic pollution but also encourages the conservation of Palmyra trees, providing protection against coastal soil erosion and enhancing soil nutrients. 🤝 Community Involvement: The project engages local fishermen and women, giving them responsibility for #mangrove restoration, thereby promoting #community participation. 👉 To read more about this inspiring initiative, click here: https://lnkd.in/gsnuy2CE 👉 To further access ESCAP-SSWA’s catalogue of SDG Good Practices, click https://lnkd.in/gAkQNx-d #SDGGoodPractice #SDG14 #LifeBelowWater #UnitedNations #ESCAPSSWA #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #MangroveRestoration #CommunityEmpowerment #Biodiversity

🌾 #Staramaki: Pioneering Sustainable Solutions in Rural Greece 🌾 Staramaki is a remarkable start-up company based in Kilkis, Northern Greece. The name "Staramaki" is a creative fusion of the Greek words for wheat (in greek "στάρι") and “straw" (in greek "καλαμάκι") reflecting their core mission. Staramaki produces eco-friendly, single-use straws made from the by-product of local wheat cultivation—specifically, the stalk left after the edible grain is harvested. This innovative initiative not only provides a sustainable alternative to plastic straws, but also plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable groups, enhancing social cohesion, and promoting local and regional development. 🌱 By utilizing agricultural waste to produce biomaterials, Staramaki champions the principles of the circular economy. Their efforts help to significantly reduce the environmental impact of microplastics, offering a low-footprint solution that benefits both people and the planet. NATIVE PLANTATION AND THE CIRCLE OF LIFE Most of us look forward to playing a role in restoring the fast-depleting forest cover in our country. This has resulted in a surge in various initiatives to create a green cover in available spaces. Unfortunately, many of such initiatives do not take into consideration the importance of ‘Circle of Life’. We at Oriearth believe simply planting trees is not enough. Look beyond plantation, parent an ecosystem. Become a proponent of the ‘Circle of Life’. I urge you to take time to go through this video with an open mind. If you see value in what we are saying, then our thoughts do align. We can work together in creating such many such eco-systems, in India and Overseas.

On #EnvironmentDay, we planted tree saplings across all our units. This initiative is part of CII Mysuru’s Mega Tree Plantation Drive. The goal of this drive is to plant 15000 saplings across Mysuru by the end of June. We are proud to contribute to this brilliant initiative. A big thank you to all our units and employees for actively participating and taking this forward. It’s a personal belief that every action, no matter how small, carries a significant impact when done collectively. As individuals and businesses, we all share the responsibility to safeguard our planet for future generations. For us, sustainability isn't just a choice, but our responsibility. At Cycle Pure Agarbathi, we take this responsibility very seriously. From our tree planting initiatives to our recyclable packaging, we've implemented numerous measures to protect our environment. As the world's first zero-carbon footprint incense manufacturer, we take pride in our contributions and we will continue to do all that we can, as an organization. This Environment Day, let's make a collective promise to do our part in preserving our planet. #NRGroup #Cycle #CyclePureAgarbathi #WorldEnvironmentDay #Business #Values #Tradition #Heritage #Environment #ClimateChange #Sustainability #CarbonNeutral #GoGreen

Sow the seeds for a sustainable future together with Sustainable Communities. Implement these Initiatives within your communities to Make a Difference. Community Composting Initiatives: Neighborhoods or communities can establish communal composting sites. Cities like Tokyo, Japan, and Bengaluru, India, have successful community composting programs where residents bring organic waste to a central location for composting. Food Rescue Apps: Apps like OLIO and No Food Waste (popular in India) allow individuals to share surplus food with neighbors, reducing food waste and helping those in need. Community Fridges: These are public refrigerators where people can donate and take food. This concept is gaining popularity in countries like Thailand and India, promoting food sharing and reducing waste. Community Gardens: Local communities can establish gardens in shared spaces, promoting local food production, social interaction, and environmental stewardship. Examples include Singapore’s community gardening initiative and Seoul’s urban farming projects. Supporting Local Farmers and Producers: Buying directly from local farmers or participating in community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs supports local economies and promotes sustainable farming practices. #FullerAcademy #SustainableLiving #GreenLiving #Community #Food

Here's how I demonstrate environmental responsibility in my daily life. #GreenerTogether #LinkedInNewsIndia 1. Having a sensible approach to understand my environment, every thing which surrounds from perspective of having a clean & healthy environment. 2. Encourage my family members(mother, wife, daughter, my brothers' & siters' & their families all over the globe about awareness for environmental responsibility & personally participate in huge plantation inside & around my home, office & places where it is feasible in legitimate manner. 3. Occasionally discuss about environmental responsibility with my connections, acquaintances in India & abroad. 4. Create awareness amongst whomsoever I came across including my close & extended family for banning use of plastic, plant trees, create small water bodies around for birds & animals for quenching their thirst, save water, recycling used water, storage of rain water through multiple ways. 5. Encourage everybody around to visit nearest forests & bird centuries to witness & enjoy the fresh & healthy air & nature around & get further inspired to create same kind of fresh serene environment around them.
