Venezuela is Europe's forgotten neighbour. The Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao are right next door. The French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe are close enough to be affected by criminal economies emerging from Venezuela. As the country is roiled by political turmoil following its elections, World of Crime has partnered up with dyami | security intelligence, the leading Dutch intelligence provider, for a three-part series revealing how Venezuela poses a political and criminal threat to the international community. Read Part 1 below covering President Maduro's history of electoral fraud and the likely global policy response.

On June 1, Nayib Bukele was sworn in for a second term as President of El Salvador. His first term was marked by the popular yet controversial Mano Dura (Iron Fist) approach, which included militarizing security, enhancing police powers, deploying troops, and increasing incarcerations for gang-related crimes. This strategy reduced homicide rates and violence in the short term but eroded the rule of law and civil liberties. Despite these criticisms, Bukele's approach is often seen as the only effective model for fighting gangs, prompting Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa to consider a similar strategy amid rising violence in his country. However, Ecuador could face additional challenges in adopting Bukele’s model. dyami | security intelligence | count on us https://lnkd.in/eQ5nPKrN #Bukele #ElSalvador #TerritorialControlPlan #Noboa #FenixPlan #Ecuador #Gangs #criminalviolence #humanrights #dyami

The Security Strategy for the Kingdom of the Netherlands published in April 2023 highlights that the complex and evolving situation in #Venezuela holds significant implications for the Netherlands. Venezuela's political instability, economic crises, extensive criminal networks, and growing alliances with non-Western powers like Russia, China, and Iran pose potential security and economic challenges that could ripple across the Caribbean and beyond. The Dutch Caribbean, particularly the ABC islands (#Aruba, #Bonaire, and #Curaçao), which share maritime borders with Venezuela, are directly impacted by flows of illicit drugs and weapons, displacement, and regional security concerns. In this three-part series, #Dyami collaborates with World of Crime (Chris Dalby) to delve into the political, international, and criminal challenges facing Venezuela, and why these developments matter for the Netherlands. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for Dutch policymakers and businesses conducting business in the region. dyami | security intelligence | count on us https://lnkd.in/eZiqW8RH

REQUEST FOR HELP: I am looking for planning frameworks for countering organized crime. How do the institutions that address this problem craft strategy? Do they use guides and, if so, are these accessible? If 'organized crime' is too narrow, I'll also take any framework or planning tool for countering political violence, state fragility, insurgency or other irregular threats and actors. Our own contribution is here (https://lnkd.in/eHYaZRja), but I'd like to do a gap analysis with other similar products. I recently had the privilege of meeting the Police Commander in charge of the Brussels Airport suicide bomb attack in 2016. (A reminder of the incident is in the BBC News report below). It was an enlightening experience to learn firsthand about the psychological impact on him and his staff. Shockingly, he lost 15% of his workforce within a very short period of time. As I prepare to share a platform at the Passenger Terminal Conference in Frankfurt this April with him, Neville Hay Avsec PM, MSyl, M.ISRM and Dr David Rubens, its a further reminder of the importance of having #riskmanagement strategies and #crisismanagement plans in place. The Commander has delivered over 300 presentations on lessons learned and the importance of preparedness and continues to shock his audiences with the details of those very sad events on that day and how it took its toll on many first responders and crisis leaders. This serves as a stark reminder for #boards and organisations to prioritise the safety and well-being of their workforce. In today's world, organisations must be prepared for potential litigation, trial by media, and examination by #compliance organisations. The ICO is just one example of the many entities that hold organisations accountable for their actions as threats such as cyber and other #ransomware attacks continue to pose a threat to all businesses whilst the specter of #terrorism also remains as geopolitics play out. Is your organisation truly prepared? Let's prioritise the safety of our workforce, ensure we have the necessary strategies & plans in place and professionalise our crisis management teams with dedicated #leadershiptraining .

Martyn’s Law is back on the agenda and while the full details will be finalised in legislation, the proposed key provisions include: 1️⃣ Risk Assessments: Venues will be required to conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential security threats and vulnerabilities. 2️⃣ Security Plans: Based on the risk assessment, venues must develop and implement a comprehensive security plan. 3️⃣ Staff Training: Employees should be trained on security procedures and the handling of potential terror threats. 4️⃣ Cooperation with Authorities: Venues will need to ensure that there is a mechanism for cooperation with local law enforcement and emergency services.
