A new partnership between Ericsson, Three Ireland and the Technological University of the Shannon in the area of 5G Standalone was highlighted at their recent Demo Day at the Athlone university campus. Digital Twins are changing the game in every industry. For #Olympic swimmers, for example, researchers at Emory University and the University of Virginia recently equipped them with devices to record their body’s acceleration, orientation and force. Unlike typical #digital video, which records 24 frames per second, these sensors capture information 512 times a second. These streams of numbers create an athlete’s #digitaltwin and are assembled in a massive database of #digitaltwins from more than 100 of the best U.S. swimmers. "With such digital twins, we can now make recommendations that immediately improve technique, offer suggestions for race strategy and point to long-term aspirational goals—all in pursuit of the optimal race plan." Like swimmers, companies can use Digital Twins to achieve the same levels of understanding - and greater operational success - through better decisions. Former professional National Football League (NFL) athlete Shawn Springs was motivated to invent to help solve the problem of concussions and other serious head injuries in sports — and he was inspired by infant car seat technology that he thought could be applied to helmets. But he sometimes faced skepticism as an inventor. “People are like, ‘Why would I bet on you if you didn’t go to school for this.’ Well, I thought maybe that's the reason why we haven’t solved this problem, because you’re betting on the people who don’t understand what it’s really like to experience it.” He channeled his own experiences as an athlete to found the company Windpact, which developed the patented Crash Cloud padding technology to absorb collision energy and soften impact, reducing the risk of serious head injuries for players. Windpact’s Crash Cloud Helmet is currently on display as part of the new “Change Your Game / Cambia tu Juego” exhibit at The Smithsonian Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at The Smithsonian National Museum of American History . This exhibit features over 60 inventions at the intersection of sports and technology — many of them invented by fellow athletes —  and encourages visitors to consider how they can make an impact in their own communities. The Lemelson Foundation recently spoke with Shawn Springs to learn more about his path from professional football player to inventor and entrepreneur. The Olympic Games, once a purely physical spectacle of athletic prowess, has undergone a profound digital metamorphosis. What began as a rudimentary website in Atlanta 1996 has evolved into a complex, interconnected ecosystem that mirrors and enhances the real-world event. The initial Olympics website, a component of IBM Info ’96, centered on providing basic information – schedules, results, and athlete profiles. Yet, the potential of technology to transform the Olympic experience was finally realized. Live streaming, social media, and interactive platforms exploded onto the scene, creating a global community united by their passion for the Games. Athletes, too, embraced technology, utilizing data analytics and wearable devices to optimize performance and push the boundaries of human capability. The concept of performance augmentation through digital twin aligns with the law of requisite variety, a system theory that a system must be as complex as the environment it seeks to control. In the context of sports, athletes and coaches are constantly adapting to evolving competition and strategies. By leveraging digital tools, they can increase the complexity of their response systems, gaining a competitive edge. Today, digital twin is emerging as the next frontier in Olympic technology. A virtual replica of the physical Games, a digital twin could encompass everything from athlete performance data to venue simulations and crowd behavior modeling. This technology promises to revolutionize how the Olympics are planned, executed, and experienced. The journey from a simple website to a sophisticated digital twin is a testament to the relentless pace of innovation. The convergence of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and other emerging wearable and wireless technologies will further blur the lines between the physical and digital realms, creating new opportunities for performance enhancement and fan engagement.

Target is to have ready an open-source UAM framework including: a full-scale vehicle design, its control capabilities and flight envelope, and the needed vertiport environment for vertical take-off and landing.
