Cracking project this exploring the future of the charity board Chair. I love the idea of ‘connecting the unconnected’ which is very consistent with a description I use of the chair being a convener and curator. Bringing together disparate opinions and ideas, people and partners, objectives and activities. I’m also interested in the observation about the relationship between a Chair and a CEO, a relationship long and rightly refered to as critical. I do wonder whether the next step for that relationship in future is that it institutionalises the relationship between CEO and Chair rather than just handling the relationship in issolation of or private from the charities wider people (board / employees / volunteers etc). The best chairs I worked with helped others to trust, value and understand how the Chair and CEO combined effectively on matters of organisational priority.
‘I have a choice to be passive or passionate’ The launch of our collaborative Future Charity Chair report was spirited and engaged. https://ow.ly/bEbF50SlwMM PwC UK Shelter Green Park United Response Worshipful Company of Management Consultants Association of Chairs Crowe UK Alex Skailes Daniel Chan MBE Helen Baker DL Kai Adams Lynne Berry CBE Malcolm McCaig Rosalind Oakley Dawn Mcnish Leila Baker Veronique Jochum Live Doodle

Following the FTC’s final Non-Complete Clause Rule, Lathrop GPM Partners Megan Anderson Anderson and Wade Hauser Hauser examine the potential exemption available to nonprofit employers and other types of employers. The final rule bans post-employment non-compete agreements after the effective date of the rule and retroactively voids existing non-compete agreements other than those with “senior executives” as defined by the rule. We couldn’t have asked for a better end to the year! Last night’s Phoenix event brought together members of the local legal community for a night that truly put the fun in fundraising. Eight bands featuring musically talented legal pros crushed it on stage AND in fundraising, bringing in nearly $88K - a new record for our Phoenix event! 🤩 🏆 Congratulations to Rock Judicata (featuring legal talent from Buchalter), who took home our Judges’ Choice Award and the title of Overall Winner. All bands fundraised for Alice Cooper's Solid Rock Teen Centers. Visit https://lnkd.in/gTSVfrBB to read the full event recap! We'd like to thank all the talented bands and their fans, our Rock Panel of Judges, the Crescent Ballroom team, our generous sponsors who helped make the night possible, and everyone who showed up to support and rock with us. We couldn't do it without you! See you next year, Phoenix! You ROCK!! 🎸 📸: VGroup Photography #lawrocks #rockgloballygivelocally #lawyerswhorock #nonprofit #fundraisingevent #battleofthebands #concert #rocknroll

Oh my god, this. The capitalist and patriarchal belief that people working in the third sector should do so for next to nothing mirrors how little we value care and how much we expect sacrifice from the "feminine" spaces in our society. VCSE organisations, in the wake of endemic public sector shortfalls and ongoing private sector extraction, are taking on society's equivalent of domestic and emotional labour. Just like teachers, nurses and civil servants, why do we believe people working in communities, charity and social enterprises should do so out of the goodness of their heart? Financially, they're often only in a *marginally* better position than those they exist to support. The only organisations which disadvantaged, marginalised and vulnerable communities trust are charities, and they reason everyone else is no longer willing or able to give is because work no longer pays and civil service hinders rather than help the people it exists to serve. Instead of compounding and upholding the neoliberal bollocks around "big society", what if we all - journalists included - actually asked people what they were experiencing, rather than make assumptions and pushing agendas?
The Times didn’t publish my Letter to the editor about this piece so I thought I would pop it here. Anyone else tired of this lazy and prejudiced journalism? —- Sir, Although there have been some disturbing stories from a handful of charities this last week, they are not, despite inferences from Libby Purves ("Charities need to regain trust or risk demise"), reflective of the other 170,000 not for profit organisations that work tirelessly to enrich our society. What is damaging trust is the subjective attacks of journalists that do so without any understanding of the sectors' work on the ground, leaning on outdated and inaccurate anecdotes to generalise about the work of over 1million staff that comprise the Third Sector. As your highly successful Christmas campaign showed last year, when we celebrate the life changing work of charities the public are generous beyond measure. So, the next time Ms Purves wishes to write about charities I'd encourage to go and visit some. She might discover a sector that is holding together the very fabric of society - and she would undoubtedly discover plenty of good. Phil Kerry NW1
