The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has issued an ‘Announcement of Opportunity’ (AO) inviting non-government entities (NGEs) to build, launch and use a telecommunications satellite. The aim of this AO is to identify and empower eligible NGEs to utilise unallocated ITU filings. This filing process necessitates the submission of comprehensive technical details regarding the satellite, including its planned orbital position and frequency usage. The purpose is to coordinate orbital slots and frequencies to prevent interference among satellites. India - as country - makes Space Debris Mitigation reality by strict rules from 2025 on, as example: indian launchers (e.g. Skyroot) are not allowed anymore to launch satellites which do not comply with the "5-years-rule" (deorbit within 5 years after end-of-business). Call me crazy, we probably need to put more emphasis on controlled deorbit. This year alone there were several incidents where “it’ll burn up in orbit” lead to less than spectacular results. Someone hit a house with space junk. Controlled deorbit is not only the safe option, it also helps keep space clean. Orbotic Systems Inc has a mechanical device to safely and reliably deorbit smallsats and ESPA class sats. If you’re a SmallSat operator, look up their D3. As the Vendée Globe 2024 continues, we are proud to highlight the role of Galileo’s Search and Rescue (SAR) service in ensuring the safety of participants and all those at sea. With Galileo SAR fully integrated into the global COSPAS-SARSAT distress alert detection system, this technology enhances global search and rescue efforts. Using Medium-altitude Earth Orbit SAR (MEOSAR) satellites, Galileo picks up distress signals emitted from emergency beacons. Once detected, this data is transmitted to MEOLUTS (Ground Stations), which pass it on to COSPAS-SARSAT Mission Control Centres for immediate action. The Galileo Return Link Service (RLS) reassures distress beacon users by confirming their signal has been received and their location verified. With the full contribution of Galileo SAR, COSPAS-SARSAT is estimated to save more than 3,000 lives annually.
