It takes 1,000 years to create just 3 cm of topsoil… Then consider the rate at which are depleting it. Something I said at an Sustainability Investment Conference as a panelist that rings true for the UN Environment Programme's theme for this year's #WorldEnvironmentDay is: 'It is important that we invest in solutions that help regenerate our resources, as opposed to sustaining things as they are'. Any business with no #regenerative plan has no real intention for the planet or to fight climate change. How are you engaging 'World Environment Day'?
“It is important that we invest in solutions that help regenerate our resources, as opposed to sustaining things as they are” - Nnenna Hemeson Today is World Environment Day! Instead of being able to celebrate our planet, we are faced with more and more environmental issues around the world. For example, Asia is in dire straits where desertification, drought, and land degradation threaten the continent and the Pacific's rich biodiversity. Did you know it takes 1,000 years to create just 3 cm of topsoil, but we're losing it at an alarming rate? The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is working to revive ecosystems worldwide. Today, UN Environment Programme and ESCAP Inclusive Business are hosting an action-packed event in Bangkok to discuss solutions: 🌏 Combating desertification and drought ️ 🌏 Sustainable food production 🌏 Circular water resource use 🌏 Drought-resilient urban development ️ Whilst many of us can't be in Bangkok, we can share this and spread awareness. This year, the theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity is “Be part of the Plan”. Everyone has a role to play and therefore can be #PartOfThePlan. This involves respecting, protecting, repairing our biological wealth and creating a safer and healthier future for all life. Healthy and vibrant ecosystems are not only important for those living within them but they can also provide healthy drinking water, food, shelter, energy and medicines for future generations. As the sustainable investor for a changing world, we work to achieve the energy transition and environmental sustainability. Biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better. #biologicaldiversity #internationaldayofbiologicaldiversity #partoftheplan #environmentalsustainability #godavaribiorefinerieslimited #somaiyagroup #somaiya

🌟 Honored Beyond Words 🌟 I am deeply grateful to the Australian of the Year Awards for recognising me as the 2025 Australian of the Year, Local Hero for Queensland. To stand among so many incredible changemakers & represent our state is both humbling and inspiring. In January, I will travel to Canberra alongside 31 extraordinary individuals for the National Australia Day Awards—an opportunity to share our stories & shine a light on causes that matter deeply to us. This recognition is not just an award; it’s a platform. And in 2025, I am determined to use this platform to spark vital conversations & advocate for meaningful change. My focus will be on protecting our environment, preserving our wildlife, and redefining sustainable progress. Together, we can address critical issues that impact all Australians: 1️⃣ Protecting Our Diverse Environment We must prioritise balance and harmony over short-term economic gains. This means challenging the industrialisation of our wild places and advocating for legislative changes that place the health of our environment above unchecked development. These will be difficult conversations, but they are necessary. By listening to one another, we can create solutions that respect both progress and preservation. 2️⃣ Closing Loopholes in Federal Koala Habitat Protection The only reason to clear federally mapped koala habitat should be for firebreaks during extreme fire crises—not for development. Current loopholes allow exploitation by those prioritising profits over protection. Together, we must push for stricter legislation to ensure our koalas and their habitats are safeguarded for future generations. 3️⃣ Rethinking Sustainable Development On the Sunshine Coast, for example, kangaroo & wallaby populations have been devastated by a 1007% increase in vehicle strikes between 2018 and 2020 due to overdevelopment. 18 areas are now declared ‘functionally extinct.’ As our population grows, we urgently need to rethink how we build—focusing on sustainable, eco-friendly practices that allow humans and wildlife to coexist. Our Collective Responsibility Australia is unique. Our landscapes, waters, mountains, & wildlife are treasures that define us. But we’ve strayed from the path of care and stewardship. 2025 must be the year we prioritise preservation alongside progress. Imagine a future where: Our endangered species thrive once again. Eco-tourism flourishes, supported by sustainable innovation. Our carbon footprint shrinks, leading the world toward Net Zero. Australians reconnect with nature, improving mental health and community well-being. Together, we can create a Nation that sets global benchmarks for protecting the environment while fostering innovation and progress. Together, we can shape a future that balances progress with preservation. 🌏 Let’s protect what makes Australia extraordinary. #AustralianOfTheYear #EnvironmentalAdvocacy #Sustainability #WildlifeProtection #Leadership #BalanceAndProgress #QueenslandPride

WWF New Zealand and EY have launched a first-of-its-kind economic analysis that shows protecting and regenerating nature in Aotearoa could save us more than $270 billion over the next 50 years. 🌱 The report writes “Our connection with te taiao – our natural world – is what makes us who we are as kiwis. But nature is in trouble. Aotearoa New Zealand has over 4,000 native species threatened or at risk of extinction – while increasingly severe and frequent climate-related weather events are showing us the enormous cost of climate change and pushing our wildlife and the ecosystems on which they rely closer to the brink.” “WWF New Zealand and EY New Zealand have partnered to deliver this report on the costs of advancing critical actions to halt and reverse biodiversity decline in Aotearoa by 2030, along with the costs of inaction. The scale of halting and reversing biodiversity decline means that many hands are needed. We illustrate the roles that different actors – such as government, industry, tangata whenua, and communities – have in supporting critical actions. The report highlights the opportunities and risks for some of our key industries and identifies the enabling conditions businesses need to make nature-positive changes in their supply chains.” 🔗 Read the full report here - https://lnkd.in/g3cQXk3C & the report summary here - https://lnkd.in/dk2mRQ9U

🌿 Excited to share that I’m currently tuned into the WWF European Business & Biodiversity Forum! 🎧 It’s truly inspiring and encouraging to see how our dependencies on nature and ecosystem services are being highlighted. Businesses thrive because of nature, and it’s crucial we take coordinated actions across both public and private sectors. 🌳 Meeting national targets on nature restoration requires collaboration and contribution from the business community. Understanding, evaluating, and addressing our impacts and dependencies on biodiversity is vital. We must assess the related risks and opportunities, and, most importantly, take actionable steps to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Nature is not just a "nice to have"; it’s essential. Healthy ecosystems and balanced landscapes are fundamental for our economic prosperity and key to the resilience of our societies. 🌍 Thank you, WWF, for organizing the European Business & Biodiversity Forum. I find it very insightful and helpful for my work in developing the strategic framework on biodiversity at Inter IKEA Group. #Biodiversity #BusinessAndNature #WWF #Sustainability #Nature #EcosystemServices #EconomicProsperity #Resilience #IKEA
