🚄 Speed. It's not every day you kickstart an initiative that's hard to slow down. Since joining Public Sector Network just 6 months ago, I've witnessed an undeniable demand for cross-sector collaboration come to life: 👉 7 esteemed ANZ academic institutions sign on as Research Partners. 👉 235 ANZ Gov Executives register for our first wave of discussions. 👉 10 major industry partners snap up all limited private sector seats for inaugural first sessions. Spearheading the launch of our Public Sector Research Innovation Council made me realise how ready people are to not just sit around a table but really create an ecosystem for continuous knowledge sharing at the cutting-edge, free from the usual red tape and risk-aversion that stifles innovation. Events truly are an ancillary to a well-defined reason to meet. When you can clearly define that purpose, everything else falls into place. Connecting government, academia, and industry sounds simple enough, but it’s the strategic commitment behind it that really makes it bold.

Last Friday, we spoke with Agnes Aljas at the Estonian Research Council’s webinar, sharing our experience as a Horizon Europe project partner in the i-Game project, which aims to facilitate innovation in the European video game and cultural sectors. We covered a range of topics: Why participate at all: What can a small research institution gain from participating in large, interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral Horizon Europe projects? In a small research institution, every large project shifts the rhythm and scope of work – is it worth it? Time factor: In large-scale projects, everything takes more time than planned. Beyond substantive work, there’s also the administrative load – coordination, reporting, etc. It can feel like a big additional cost! Are there also rewards? Strategic alignment: For us, projects must connect with our ongoing research themes and create synergies between the ongoing projects. Humanities and social scientists in a tech-centred project: How do humanities and social scientists find their place in projects led by tech partners? Combining expertise: Do other partners recognize the added value our knowledge brings to the project? The culture of international collaboration: How do we navigate diverse work styles and expectations within international teams? But there are also topics we barely touched but are crucial to succeed as an international project team. Can you extend this list? ❤️Finding common ground with project partners takes time, and it is important to get to know people beyond their roles. Who are we beyond our job titles? What inspires us and drives our actions? 🌱 Are we seen and valued? Strong relationships create an open environment for discussing challenges and sharing ideas. 💡Taking time to understand what truly matters to our team members helps us build stronger bonds and foster trust. 🔥When challenges arise – big deadlines or doubts about whether our collaboration can truly make a difference in the world – these human connections are, what will make the critical difference. At Verian, we work end-to-end across the policy cycle, bringing evidence, insights, research and advice to public policy challenges. In response to the UK government’s new mission-based approach we are delighted to announce the launch of seven centres of excellence to complement our existing teams and support our clients with the delivery of the government's national priorities. The centres connect across the UK teams and bring together Verian’s multi-disciplinary methodological expertise, innovations, case studies and thought leadership, together with our policy and subject matter experts; and citizen participation capability. Each centre of excellence is led by a member of the UK leadership team and connects with the expertise of colleagues from across the UK and globe. UK CEO of Verian Group, Craig Watkins, commented: "I am delighted to announce the launch of these seven new centres of excellence. We have created these centres specifically to integrate across our existing teams, bringing together the three Verian pillars of our multi-methods technical expertise, the ability to bring the UK citizen into the heart of participatory decision-making, and our policy and subject matter experts. This will ensure that we can continue to best support our clients’ priorities and the UK’s new government’s mission-based approach to delivery. Our approach builds on our existing success and structures and will enable us to better serve our clients, bringing them the latest innovations from across the globe and helping them to understand and connect with citizens to tackle the range of policy challenges faced by the UK." Earlier this month, adjacent to the 8th World Conference on Research Integrity in Athens, iRISE held a successful consortium meeting with our partners from OSIRIS and TIER2 Project. This gathering marked a significant milestone in our collaborative journey. Key Highlights: Stakeholder Input: Community feedback is essential to inform the direction of our project. The stakeholder forum provided valuable input on improving communication of our findings, ensuring our outputs are inclusive and accessible. Work Package Collaboration: Important discussions on overlapping work packages helped identify synergies and establish timelines for the next phase. This is crucial for consolidating evidence within iRISE and creating implementation guides for interventions to improve reproducibility. Networking and Collaboration: The meeting fostered strong connections among our TIER2 and OSIRIS colleagues. The openness and collaborative spirit demonstrated by all partners were inspiring, emphasising a genuine effort to improve reproducibility rather than competitiveness. Diversity and Inclusion: Our consortium’s diverse backgrounds and perspectives are key to our innovative and effective collaboration. Embracing diversity enhances creativity, problem-solving, and ensures our research is relevant to a wider audience. Delivering Evidence: We have a lot of work ahead of us to compile the evidence generated within iRISE. Our focus will be on delivering robust implementation guides and ensuring our research informs policy effectively. Thank you to everyone involved for their contributions and commitment. The insights gained and connections made during this meeting have laid a solid foundation for our continued success. We look forward to the next steps in our collaborative efforts. #ResearchCollaboration #Reproducibility
