In the five years since I arrived in Poland, I have been taken aback by the rapid advancement of the Polish economy. When asked if life in Poland was expensive, I used to casually reply, "oh, just divide everything by two." That time is over. While walking through the city centers of Dieppe, Le Tréport, and Mers-les-Bains in Normandy a week ago, I was struck by the number of buildings in need of renovation (a sight I have become unaccustomed to in Poland), that is, one in two (old electrical installations, single glazing, etc). Looking at the construction dates: 1857, 1904, ... All this requires huge investments. Even when renovated, the outdated building materials mean that these buildings remain unheatable and damp. Saravanan Sugumaran's （a.k.a. 苏伟南) first Chinese presentation! MORROW Architects & Planners were delighted to host the Party Secretary of #Jieyang City, Guangdong, one of our current clients, during his delgations whirlwind 48-hour visit to Singapore to learn about our urban planning approach. The party secretary was also eager to understand Singapore's strategy for becoming an attractive city to foreign investors by cultivating soft power and trust. Luckily, Saravanan of MORROW Intelligence is an expert on soft power and was able to discuss the evolution of Singapore's strategies from the 1960s to the 2020s. It's not surprising that while many important policies have kept Singapore an attractive destination, a foundational trait is Singapore's long-term and resilient urban planning policies.

A courtesy visit to the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Singapore, where we met with Mr. Arūnas Karlonas, the Commercial Attaché of the Republic of Lithuania. Mr. Karlonas expressed his excitement about the significant increase in the number of Singaporean visitors to the Baltic States in 2024. A Little Background: The Baltic States—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—are three beautiful countries in Northern Europe, located along the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. Known for their rich history, unique cultures, and stunning landscapes, each offers a distinctive experience. - Estonia is renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, vibrant digital society, and scenic landscapes, ranging from the charming streets of Tallinn to serene forests and islands. - Latvia, with its stunning Art Nouveau architecture in Riga, sandy beaches along the Baltic coast, and lush forests, blends urban charm with natural beauty. - Lithuania, the largest of the three, is celebrated for its historical sites like Vilnius Old Town, picturesque countryside, and rich cultural heritage. As association for international logistrial real estate, we need your support to strengthening European competitiveness: this also means being able to react much more quickly to changes. Here we need an initiative to speed up all approval procedures: for example, we believe that a building permit must be issued within a maximum of 6 months, but you will know that this period is significantly longer in France. Who can predict what will happen in 4 years' time, if the building permit applied for today is granted in France? This does not only apply to France, of course, but to many other EU countries. This is the key to competitiveness, particularly in the area of logistics and industrial real estate: without a real estate basis, the industry cannot achieve anything. Prague's City Council has finally decided to buy the Žižkov Cargo station from Czech Railways for CZK 1.43 billion. The decision clears the way for a redevelopment of the protected building, which will form the heart of the new district being developed in Prague. Once renovated, the station building can serve as both a public amenity center and a significant cultural-social hub for the entire city. #MORROW's founding chairman Dr Liu Thai Ker and Executive Director of Planning kenan ou, recently discussed #Singapore's future of #urbanplanning with The Business Times. "Urban planning isn't just about aesthetics or economic growth—it's about meeting fundamental human needs and ensuring long-term quality of life." Dr Liu advocated for a comprehensive master plan that promotes intergenerational bonding and enhances #accessibility, incorporating educational and entertainment facilities to prioritise well-being over simple visual appeal. Despite Singapore's challenges of limited land space, Dr Liu is confident that #affordable and readily accessible public housing is achievable with the correct approach. Additionally, Kenan referenced MORROW’s project in Kunming, #China, to illustrate how thoughtful planning should consider future generations, adhere to global standards, and balance #preservation with development. She highlighted that a well-designed city is a lasting legacy, while poor planning can lead to costly consequences.
