World Mental Health Day, marked on 10 October every year, gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on an issue vital to our personal and professional lives—mental health. It serves as a crucial reminder that mental well-being is equally as important as physical health. Yet, in many places, it still feels like an afterthought. However, the World Economic Forum’s Centre for Health & Healthcare continues to place mental health and workforce well-being front and centre. Our latest article highlights an important question: How can we truly prioritize mental health at work? It’s not just about offering wellness apps or yoga sessions—though those can help. It’s about creating a culture where people feel safe to say, “Hey, I’m struggling today,” without fear of stigma or judgement. It’s about training managers to recognize the signs and encouraging open conversations. When we support mental health, we’re not just ticking a box. We’re creating workplaces where people thrive, feel heard, and bring their whole selves to the table. And guess what? That’s good for everyone—employees and businesses alike. Let’s make mental health a year-round priority, not just a one-day conversation. The concept of mental health and well-being washing raises important ethical concerns that need to be addressed. This article effectively highlights how organizations may sometimes prioritize appearances over genuine support for mental health initiatives. It's essential to ensure that mental health strategies are meaningful and impactful, rather than just superficial gestures. Raising awareness about this issue is crucial for promoting authentic mental health practices in the workplace.
