Labour exploitation and abuse is all too common for many migrant workers in the EU. A new training manual from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights provides workplace inspectors with tips, examples and exercises to better protect migrant workers’ rights. The five main areas covered by the training are: ℹ️providing information; ⚖️supporting access to justice and facilitating complaints; 🔎identifying labour exploitation; 💶right to backpay and compensation; 🏠🛠️right to adequate housing & to change employer.

Many thanks Cindy Berman for your kind words, and valuable input in reviewing the report! I hope the report will contribute to making grievance mechanisms and actual remedies more accessible to exploited workers. The report shows that aggrieved workers often need help from someone - civil society, trade unions, legal aid - to even initiate a process, be it a state-based or non-state-based process. This also applies to company-based and sector-based mechanisms, which likewise need to become more accessible.
Highly commend this eye-opening report on how and whether exploited migrant workers in the Baltic Sea Region - including the Nordics - get access to remedy. Instructive when you think that some countries, with labour law protection and monitoring systems, still fail the most vulnerable workers. But there are some stories of hope and success too. Congratulations to Tina Davis, Dr. and Saara Haapasaari co-authors - supported by HEUNI. I was so pleased to play a small part in reviewing the draft report.
