Tourism in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is crucial for economic growth, cultural heritage preservation, and environmental protection. Pacific Tourism Organisation CEO Chris Cocker emphasized this at the virtual launch of a new report on Effective Public-Private-Community Partnerships (PPCP) for sustainable development in #SIDS4. The report, developed in collaboration with Compete Caribbean and several key tourism organizations, is part of the preparations for the #SIDS4 Global Business Network Forum 2024. Participants were guided through the report's findings, case studies, and a new PPCP framework. This initiative represents a significant step towards resilient and inclusive tourism in SIDS. #PacificTourism #SustainableTourism #SIDS4 #Partnerships #PublicPrivate #PPCP #GlobalBusinessNetworkForum

DT Global Europe recently hosted a session led by David Michelmore (Conservation and Development consultant) about the powerful intersection of #CulturalHeritage and #Tourism in promoting #sustainable development, with a focus on Ethiopia's efforts to leverage heritage for socio-economic growth. David highlighted some key takeaways from when he was the Team Leader of “Promoting Heritage for Ethiopian Development (PROHEDEV)” implemented by DT Global and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. This program emphasizes local ownership, with the motivation to adress regional needs, and includes a combination of conservation, tourism infrastructure development, and capacity building. 💡 Key insights from the session included: 🔑 The importance of World Heritage status as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation. 🏛️ Tourism diversification projects that build capacity in local communities while preserving traditional crafts and urban heritage. ⚖️ The need to balance new tourism ventures with the protection of local culture and businesses, ensuring long-term sustainability. 😊 The significance of creating a positive visitor experience, focusing on key attractions and hassle-free visits. During his visit, David explained the potential of heritage sites to generate local income and provide livelihoods for communities, while also highlighting the challenges. He explained that successful tourism isn't accidental but requires careful planning and community involvement. In international development, heritage preservation is not just about monuments—it's about people, culture, and economic empowerment. 💪🌎 #IWork4DTGlobal #WeAreDTGlobal #CulturalHeritage #SustainableTourism #InternationalDevelopment #Ethiopia

Great success for more jobs in Africa.
Voice4Africa @ #ITB2024 Yesterday, our CEO Hanna Kleber - as founding member of the ReThinking Africa Foundation - moderated together with Dr. Holger Bingmann a panel at ITB bringing together the tourism ministers of #Zimbabwe and #Zambia and the ambassador of #Ethiopia to discuss the significant potential of Africa's tourism sector linked to the transformative effects of targeted investments. Panelists explored strategic methods to sustainably advance development, considering environmental, cultural, and economic factors. While much emphasis is on driving economic growth, there is an imperative to preserving the unique biodiversity and socio-cultural heritage of the African destinations. We are excited to see various projects developing from future partnerships between the German and African private sectors in the field of tourism! #voice4africa #tourisminvestment #sustainabledevelopment

#stas2024 update Tourism and Development in Sub Saharan Africa: Current Issues and Local (community) Realities This book by Prof Marina Novelli captures many realities that we often discuss at Sustainable Tourism and Africa Summit each year. #stas2024 is no exception. The book acknowledges the paradoxes, complexities and inequalities of tourism in relation to development, wealth creation, growth, redistribution, governance and hosts-guests’ relationships. But there are now realities. For example , there are new complexities with community engagement. I have worked with host communities in Kenya for nearly 25 years, and today the biggest challenges of community integration in tourism is predatory community financing. I will join the community panel at #stas2024 to speak more about this threat. Meanwhile, we look forward to hearing the perspective Liesl Liebenberg a hotel school manager with expertise in EIA, disaster management and sustainable tourism development, on innovations in community integration in tourism. #stas is for brave people For registration got too events.sttakenya.org or DM Sustainable Travel & Tourism Africa

November is Tourism Awareness Month in #Guyana and this year’s theme: ‘A People-Centred Tourism Product: Elevating Our Profile,’ reminds me of an earlier visit to the Rupununi & Essequibo with colleagues of the Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility (CCPF). ✅ In the Rupununi, CCPF is working with local stakeholders and #MSMEs to improve their offering of #Sustainable & #Inclusive tourism experiences that can generate more revenues for the communities. Similarly, the focus in Essequibo is to increase visibility of the county to potential visitors by making the cluster more competitive. ✅ Both projects aim to assist Guyana to develop its tourism sector with strong support of CCPF’s partners – the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, the Caribbean Development Bank & the Government of Canada. Happy Tourism Month Guyana! 👉 Learn more about the Partnership and its projects in Guyana here: https://lnkd.in/eBCHz9uv
