As we approach World Sight Day on the second Thursday of October, it's crucial to reflect on the state of eye health in our country. Since its inception in 2000 by the Lions Club International Foundation, this day has been pivotal in raising awareness about visual impairment and eye health. The Hard Facts: ❌ 5.4 million people in our country are irreversibly blind (2011 census). ❌ This number has likely increased significantly over the past 14 years. ❌ Many eye conditions remain untreatable despite medical advances. When ophthalmologists have to deliver the news that an eye condition is untreatable, it's devastating for both patients and their families. However, this doesn't have to be the end of the road. Life doesn't stop with vision loss. Today, we have: ✅ Rehabilitation programs. ✅ Educational opportunities. ✅ Skill development initiatives. ✅ Assistive technologies that empower the visually impaired. This World Sight Day, we urge all ophthalmologists, eye care professionals, and health officials to: 1️⃣ Recognize your unique position to provide hope. 2️⃣ Connect patients with rehabilitation resources. 3️⃣ Share information about available support systems. 🌍📚 #WhatWeAreReading A recent study in the AOSIS African Vision and Eye Health Journal highlights the global shortage of optometrists, a critical factor in tackling poor vision. Despite high-income countries meeting recommended optometrist-to-population ratios, low-income and less developed countries lag significantly, with one optometrist serving over a million people in some regions. Low optometrist-to-patient ratios are strongly associated with a higher magnitude of unaddressed blindness and poor vision.
