News: EU Commission and Switzerland. On 20 December 2024 the Pres. of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the Pres. of the Swiss Confederation Viola Amherd confirmed completion of negotiations on broad package of agreements, that aim to deepen and expand the EU-Switzerland bilateral relationship. With update of five agreements and a new agreement allowing Switzerland to participate in several European Union programmes open to association of third countries: HORIZON Europe, Euratom Research and Training, ITER/F4E (Fusion for Energy), Digital Europe, Erasmus+ and EU4HEALTH . 1 Jan. 2025 Swiss entities are able to participate in calls from that date.

The European Research Days 2024 - Oceania (9-13 December) will be launched on Monday next week. The free virtual event provides the research community with information and support for scientific exchange and collaboration with Europe. The ERD is divided into 5 days - each day focusing on a specific theme and aimed at a specific audience. The evening event on day 5 will focus on PhD & Postdoc Opportunities in the EU Member States. In a recent article published by Research Professional News, Massimo Busuoli sheds light on the UK's resurgence in #HorizonEurope funding. Despite #Brexit's initial turbulence, he notes a persistent eagerness among European entities to collaborate with their UK counterparts. Interestingly, Brexit led to an unexpected surge in UK universities' presence in Brussels. Massimo Busuoli attributes this to a strategic maneuver by UK players, establishing new offices in the city. However, he acknowledges the need to rebuild a culture of participation that waned during the years of absence. "While it may take time to re-establish the efficient system we once knew, I anticipate British participation to regain momentum for the successor to Horizon Europe—framework programme 10—scheduled to commence in 2028, pending UK association confirmation," remarks Busuoli. He suggests that the final phase of Horizon Europe will serve as a preparatory phase for the UK, positioning it adeptly for future endeavors. As we navigate these transitions, it's evident that collaborative efforts remain key in advancing scientific frontiers and fostering innovation on a global scale.
