Great to represent the European Hydropower Alliance at the ETIP HYDROPOWER event this morning. I made the following points on the key contribution of #hydropower to the #energy transition: ⚡ Carbon free renewable electricity: #hydropower represents 13% of the EU's electricity and 1/3rd of the EU #renewable electricity. Can't do without it! 🤸♂️ Flexibility: hydro dams and pumped hydro storage can deliver #electricity and system services in minutes and even seconds. This is key for a resilient #powergrid 〰 Storage: hydropower represents 95% of the total electricity #storage in the EU! The development of #solar power leads to very high requirements for daily storage, while #wind increases the need for monthly/seasonal storage. Pumped storage and reservoirs meet these system needs for security of supply. 💧 Development potential: #repowering of existing plants and hydro pumped storage new build can help deliver a decarbonized power system. In France only there is a potential of 5GW to be tapped. 🌎 And it's not only about electricity: hydropower supports water management in case of droughts, and it helps prevent floods downstream. It's also about #communities, and local economic development, preserving #biodiversity and #sustainability. 🏗 Hydropower is also an EU based #industry, with strong EU value chains and export capacities. This needs to be maintained and developed, that's why it was key to have hydropower as an integral part of the #NZIA. Hydropower contributes to the EU #competitiveness by delivering clean, secure and dispatchable electricity, further enabling #electrification of uses. The EU Hydropower Alliance supports the need for further stakeholder engagement together with the European Commission to build an effective EU hydropower strategy.

Powering Sustainable Hydropower Development in Europe. On 11th October 2024, Eurelectric, the Federation of European electricity industry, and the International Hydropower Association (IHA) signed an MoU to boost policy and advocacy efforts for stronger regulatory support for hydropower technologies, placing hydropower and pumped storage at the heart of Europe's energy discussions. Attention has been directed to modernizing existing hydropower plants. 💡Until 2030, almost 25% of global hydropower investment will be spent on modernizing aging plants. For Europe and North America, this investment is forecasted to reach nearly 90%, as the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported. The International Hydropower Association (IHA) released today its #WorldHydropowerOutlook that provides an in-depth analysis of the industry, highlighting key trends, statistics, and insights. The key takeaway is clear: we need more #hydropower, done better and delivered faster. To reach #netzero by 2050, International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimate that around double the amount of hydropower that is currently installed is needed. This would require that 26GW are added every year until 2030, around 5GW above the current build out trend. Beyond 2030 and until 2050, the annual new capacity additions needed rise to 50GW. Scaling the industry to deliver these volumes will put pressure on the entire supply chain, including the availability of the right talent. Closer and longer-term collaboration among industry players will be critical, giving OEMs the needed visibility to scale capabilities, while asset owners will secure access to limited resources and be protected against potential supply chain disruptions.
