Those were the days my friend, we thought they d never end. Who was lucky enough to enjoy this GENIUS idea by CONTINENTAl airlines ? This video is from about 1992 and the product launched in late 92 to Europe and domestically in the US in early 93. The name Business First is derived from the MERGING of FIrst Class, and the new concept of Business class , both of which were seen as overpriced and less used, but with most of the comforts at a price only about 5 to 15 % higher than FULL economy, CO coded the fare A Vs. B ELite mileagers could be waitlisted. The then CMO of CO explains the marketing and very precise pricing strategy , which slowly shed image of a BUDGET carrier in just a few years. On longer North American and European Routes, as many as 20% of the seats were dedicated to this 2nd class of service making many older, established European airlines notice and start copycating as this two class confirguration 20/80% proved to be more profitable than the 3 class system used whicw was also very hard to forecast on most long international routes. Many passerngers saw little differentiation between F and A class, except the price and for a while many companies permitted employees to use the service as there was minimal differnce in price over Y . #airlinefood #airlineeconomics #airlinemarketing #pricing

I learnt early on in my career that you can’t run a transport company from behind a desk. I’m the first to admit that sometimes I don’t always follow this (and let the diary run my day) so a rare trip out today for a couple of hours for a safety tour at Crystal Palace bus station and the surrounding area reminded me of a few things that I should not forget: 1. Theory. The drivers know what’s going on and they can give you better insight than anything else. Use the data to guide the insight and don’t use it as insight in its own right 2. The customer offering at the stop can always be better 3. Looks are everything. A poorly dressed bus regardless of age stands out 4. Riding a route end to end with a stopwatch and a piece of paper may be getting back to basics (and odd for me in light of the subjects of my regular posts!) but it grounds you as a bus leader. I need to do more of it and find the time to make sure i do. Thanks to all those drivers, TfL staff and customers in and around Crystal Palace today that indulged me in what became an unexpected period of self reflection. These people are the real heroes of delivering a service for London - we’re just in the orchestra checking they are in tune. Whilst I may use the bus daily (and one visit out isn’t going to change the world) it can always serve to help ground us as transport leaders #futuretransport

For the past four years, Australia’s leading Mercedes-Benz retail group has been strongly represented at the nation’s most prestigious gathering of business leaders, the AFR Business Summit. As a major supporter of the annual event that sees participants and political and business guest speakers discuss and debate the key economic and policy issues of the day, LSH Auto Australia continues to play an important role as a business community member. The recent Business Summit was held over 11 and 12 March at Hilton Sydney. Key topics such as the impact of AI, energy security, the drive for greater productivity, the push for de-carbonisation and the constantly changing geo-political environment were discussed. This post marks the end of the journey we took together with Arriva over the last 14 years. news & narrative #DB (Deutsche Bahn) has completed the sale of #ArrivaGroup to #ISquaredCapital, a leading independent global infrastructure investor headquartered in Miami. Arriva is one of Europe’s leading providers of passenger transportation operating in 11 countries. The transaction follows DB’s strategy Strong Rail aiming for additional growth in climate-friendly rail transport in Germany. Record investments in the core business demonstrate DB’s strategic course. On a more personal note: It has been an exciting journey working as DB spokesperson in this area. Together with Arriva comms, I've navigated through Brexit and Covid and worked intensively on different transactions with investors in and outside Europe. The overall sale process proved to be more of a marathon than a sprint! We appeared a few times on the front page of The Times and in many worldwide media reports through the sales processes. We even made the front cover of Vogue with an Arriva employee and were mentioned in the Queen’s Speech. Despite being regularly in London, I somehow managed to avoid being run over by one of the iconic red Arriva busses (I always looked in the wrong direction – a huge thank you to the cautious bus drivers 😊). I have worked with great and inspiring colleagues, learned a lot about different working cultures, finance comms and had a really good time. I am going to keep in mind what a colleague in London said to me: Once you have done such a sale process, you can do anything in comms. It is also exactly 6 years ago today that I had my first working day in London – it’s so rare for things to come full circle so perfectly. Back to the news - this is a win: win for both our organisations!
