Fingleton White was engaged to evaluate thirteen sites across six of the UK's Gas Network operators' networks to assess the impact on existing Hazardous Area Zoning if hydrogen was introduced into the existing gas network. This project was undertaken through the Ofgem Network Innovation Allowance, and was a collaborative approach between multiple network operators, Northern Gas Networks, Wales & West Utilities, Cadent Gas Limited, Scotland / Southern Gas Networks, and National Gas The ATEX 153 Directive (1999/92/EC) is implemented into UK law as the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR). Due to the difference in characteristics and group classification between natural gas and hydrogen, any conversion of existing equipment requires assessment to ensure that the assets are suited to use within a hydrogen atmosphere. This included establishing the suitability of the existing electrical ATEX-rated equipment. Hazardous Area Zoning was calculated utilising an updated version of IGEM's SR/25 Calculator, which included procedures established in Supplement 1 to IGEM/SR/25 for the use of Natural Gas / Hydrogen Blends and 100% Hydrogen. The resultant zones were plotted on the existing site operational drawings to enable all parties to gain an understanding of the impact on various items of equipment on site, any changes to safe areas within the site and additionally whether the new zones extended beyond the boundary of the existing site. The project took place across a representative sample of sites including high-pressure network offtakes, pressure reduction installations, district governor installations and high-pressure storage sites. #HydrogenEnergy #RenewableEnergy #SustainableFuels #FingletonWhite
