Day two of the In-Person AgriSchool - Broiler Management considered using on-farm data effectively. Yiannis Christodoulou, Managing Director, Progressus stated that traditional manual record-keeping tells us a lot about history, but nothing really about the present. The real value of data, however, is to capture trustworthy, accurate data to understand what is happening in real-time, and importantly be able to use this to make informed decisions. As we move into the near future, there is an expectation that the amount of farm data that needs to be captured, for example; data related to measuring carbon footprint and animal welfare will only increase. As the need for data and the need for live data increases, it virtually becomes impractical and, in a way, impossible for this data to be harvested manually by farm staff. As an industry, we have no choice but to digitalize and automate data collection. What does this mean? Simply, changing from manual and labor-intensive data collection, which is prone to human error and delays in data processing, to utilizing modern digital sensors and data harvesting and processing technology. Such technology, which is not generally affordable, will not only help collect data but also help analyze it and present it in easy-to-understand dashboards that aid the decision-making process – IN REAL TIME. The end result is to use information in real-time to identify and prevent problems, leading to farming becoming more efficient, profitable, and sustainable. He gave a real-life example of how an integrator used this information to schedule the depletion of broilers from farms based on actual body weight, not just as per the pre-determined processing schedule set at the start. This resulted in achieving the exact meat yields as planned and at the same time minimizing resource (feed, water, energy) wastage on-farm, leading to overall improved profitability of the entire operation. We are very happy to finally launch our new website www.osterlensaffran.io which marks the beginning of a new era for our business. We expand our reach from producing premium organic saffron, to high flying goals of revolutionise the saffron industry from the ground up. This is how we are going to do it: Small Crops, Big Dreams This venture begun back in 2018. What about if robots could pick saffron, probably the worlds most difficult crop to challenge? Saffron has been harvested manually for the past 3500 years which is now about to change. It took us few years but finally it works and today we’re exited to show what we’re up to. At a time when traditional farming technology continues to grow larger and heavier, we’ve developed a picking technology that’s ideal for small scale farming. It’s low in energy consumption, light enough to transport with ease, and is powered by electric energy, not fossil fuel. The technology itself is transparent. It utilizes RTK/GNSS navigation, employs an AI vision system for object detection, and features high–precision mechanics on its three–axis arm. But perhaps the most important aspect this revolutionary platform delivers is an ability to look at farming with a new perspective – a respectful approach that balances the needs of both humans and nature. And the organic saffron we harvest remains the same. Premium.
