🎉 Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Mr Olivér Várhelyi announces that the European Commission will develop a new European Cardiovascular Health Plan ⤵️ 📽️ The success and impact of a European CVH Plan will depend not only on what is achieved in the next few years but on how it is achieved so that no one and no country is left behind. EACH calls on addressing societal barriers, underserved populations, discrimination on all grounds, and fundamental inequities that permeate health systems across Europe. "Animal welfare is one of those rare issues that is neither left nor right." EU citizens care about animal welfare, but why is this not being translated into political action? The upcoming European Elections offer a golden opportunity for political parties and prospective MEPs across the board to demonstrate that they are truly taking heed of citizens’ concerns about animal welfare. It is a chance for them to make concrete political commitments to protecting animals and show constituents that this is a political priority. An important development coming from the European Commission . Plz see the important response from Oliver Varhelyi about the need to tackle #CVD. Olivér Várhelyi highlighted several key points regarding cardiovascular health in his responses: Major Focus on Cardiovascular Diseases: He emphasized that cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality in the EU and a significant factor for ill-health and disability. Together with cancer, CVDs account for more than half of premature deaths in Europe. Prevention and Early Detection: Várhelyi intends to improve the prevention and early detection of CVDs, focusing on reducing risk factors like obesity and promoting healthier lifestyles. Digital Health Solutions: He plans to harness digital health technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to enhance precision diagnostics and treatment, improving the management of cardiovascular diseases. Cross-Cutting Approach to Prevention: Cardiovascular health is seen as part of a broader strategy to tackle non-communicable diseases (NCDs). He advocates for a cross-cutting approach to lifelong prevention that addresses shared risk factors such as nutrition, physical activity, and harmful behaviors like tobacco and alcohol use. Collaborative Action: He intends to build on existing collaborations with Member States, such as joint actions on cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, to further strengthen efforts in these areas. I'm a big fan of Prime Ministerial TV debates but Tuesday night’s programme was awful. Not because Keir Starmer, Rishi Sunak or Julie Etchingham did a bad job. But because the format was designed by political advisers, not by TV creatives. And it showed. It doesn’t need to be this way. Those of us who care about the quality of political debate should be asking: how can we improve the leadership TV debates? In this week's SMF Campaign Chronicles I set out some ideas: - Start with the principle that the debate is with the public not between the leaders. - Encourage sustained conversation and argument, not crossfire or 'gotcha' moments. - Let the broadcasters make the debate relatable and accessible to ordinary people, just as they do with other news and interview formats. - Try new formats in pursuit of making the TV debates better for the public: leaders on sofas or round a kitchen table; video explainers before questions; a conversation with an audience member; questioning from the financial editor; sections where we focus on one leader at a time; and so on. - Open up the organisation of the debate to more public scrutiny. - Establish a House of Lords Committee on Prime Ministerial Debates to make recommendations and add public interest to the negotiations. The losers from Tuesday night’s television debate were the public. This is because of the way TV debates are negotiated and structured. This is something that can be changed and improved for everyone's benefit. This is something I'm passionate about and I'm keen to work collaboratively with other organisations after the election in order to improve the quality of the TV debates in the interests of the public for the future. I don't have all the answers but let me know your thoughts on how you think we can improve the debates in future. Why are the #EUelections2024 so important for #animalwelfare? We asked some of the MEPs who signed the #VoteforAniamls pledge to explain the EU's crucial role in improving legislation for animals. The European elections are only two weeks away. So far over 700 candidates have pledged to do better for animals, but many more have yet to do so. Specifically, we need the lead candidates in each group to take the pledge, as they are the ones with the highest likelihood to be elected. Help us contact them and let them know that when you cast your vote in June, you will make their commitment to animal welfare a priority. Send a message to candidates asking them to take the pledge, committing to 10 demands for higher welfare standards in Europe: https://lnkd.in/d7G5izer

Simple nudging strategies can significantly change consumer purchasing behavior. Participants in a study of Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and Technical University of Munich that were exposed to nudges like markings on the floor were about twice as likely to choose products with high animal welfare standard than the control group. Exactly! Our global community, represented by the European Alliance for Cardiovascular Health (EACH), has solidified the WHY behind the urgent need for action on cardiovascular health. Together with #MEPs, we’ve defined the WHAT through concrete priorities and strategic objectives. Now, the focus must shift to the HOW—ensuring effective implementation, sufficient funding, and addressing inequalities within the Union head-on.
