“As designers, we sometimes focus so deeply on the craft of design that we forget the material realities of the industrialized world. Touring Bioforcetech Corporation was a great opportunity to open our eyes to the largely invisible processes that keep our world moving and the tireless efforts of people trying to chip away at big, hairy problems.” - Carlos Terminel At Whipsaw, we know that early design decisions significantly influence a product’s longevity, materials, repairability, and end-of-life impact—accounting for up to 80% of its environmental footprint. That's why we continuously seek innovative solutions in sustainability, and find new reasons to feel inspired. Our recent visit to OurCarbon, a leading carbon capture facility, is redefining sustainability in waste management. Their technology not only captures hundreds of tonnes of carbon each year, but also converts this waste into a stable, versatile material. Here’s some of our key takeaways from our tour with Garrett Benisch. #Materials #Sustainability

The future of our built environment is increasingly embracing nature. Bio-based materials are now at the forefront of #building #design and #construction. However, outdated regulations and industry scepticism continue to hinder wider adoption. As we push towards achieving "zero" carbon, these materials will be pivotal in driving this transformation. In this new series, I'm excited to share insights on how bio-based products can shape a sustainable #NetZero future — written by Richard Francis. This week s topic of SDGs-AMP 2024 Workshop Series 4 was DESIGN THINKING AND INNOVATION with focus on Circular Design Thinking. #circulardesign is the practice of creating durable ,reusable ,repairable and recyclable products that generate zero waste to support a circular economy. Designers considers all stages of a product lifecycle and ensure that is sustainable from manufacturing to disposal. some of the critical points to consider are: #Rawmaterial - what is the source of the material and how can we extract it sustainably? #productspecifications - is the product reusable ,repairable and recyclable? #manufacturingprocess - is it energy efficient and does it generate any waste? #distributionanduse - how much energy does it take to deliver and use the products /service and where does this energy come from? #disposal - can the product be dismantled , can it be re-used in manufacturing process again or can it be retuned to earth? Benefits of Circular Design Thinking Environmental Sustainability - reduces waste and pollution , conserves natural resources and promotes biodiversity. Economic Advantages- new business opportunities and revenue streams , reduces costs through resource efficiency and waste utilization.

#GlobalRecyclingDay | Engineering a greener tomorrow. 🌱 Our legacy is built on creating innovative, sustainable solutions for materials handling and recycling. Our philosophy is based on the conviction that technological advances can make a significant contribution to global environmental initiatives. Here's how we work to make a difference: Careful innovation | MSizer By capturing the essence of materials, reusing and revaluing them, and precisely matching them to the unique conditions of different industries, we recycle and unlock the potential of every particle. Leveraging nature's efficiency | Sand Washing We clean and prepare materials for reuse, conserving precious resources and enabling a more cooperative interaction between nature and industry. The gift of gravity | GSort To minimize environmental impact, the natural force that separates materials allows us to reduce the need for water and energy-intensive processes, making recycling more harmonious for the ecosystem. Beyond the visible | MSort Extending our view into the spectrum of materials, identifying and categorizing them with precision never before possible. This not only supports the recycling of traditional materials, but also opens new doors for the reuse of resources once considered non-recyclable. As we integrate these technologies into every major industry, we are collaborating in progress. Each innovation is a step closer to reimagining the global potential of recycling. #engineering #recyclingsolutions #sustainabledevelopment #materialhandling #screeningtechnology #legacybuilders #environmentalconservation #futurefocus

We are all aware of the #footprint concept, but it was only about three years ago when starting at ELFIN Consulting GmbH talking to my colleague Dr. Michael Kühnen that I learned about the #Handprint approach. What I like about the concept? It doesn't focus on the negative impact your business activities create, but looks at the positive side of your business activities. We too often neglect that part and miss therewith how to potentially amplify our positive impacts. Don't get me wrong both sides are important and need to be looked at and analyszed and thus the #handprint approach offers a good framework for doing so. I am interested to learn from you my network: Who has already tried this? What lessons did you learn?

The final session Moderated by Mayowa Oniosun for the Fourth series of the SDG AMP foundation training. He introduced the Facilitator, Oluwaseyi Olarinde as Dream Business Manager, GPFI an Environmental stewardship and sustainable driven development expert to present the topic "Design Thinking and Innovation". The session was interesting and impactful, it started with What is Circular Design? And the definition was given as Circular Design is the practice of creating durable, reusable and recyclable products that generate zero waste to support a circular economy. It is considered by designers that all stages of a product's lifecycle are sustainable from manufacturing to disposal. The Cycle of Resources in this heading the sustainable nature cycle was discussed talking about the circular model which about eliminating waste and ensuring production are regenerative. The linear model which talks about the take - make - waste approach and is based on two strong assumptions: boundlessness and easy availability of resources (energy and raw materials) as well as a limitless regenerative capacity of the earth. Also, the three principles of circular design were discussed on which is based on eliminate, circulate and regenerative. Circular design thinking is the innovative approach that combines the principles of circular economy with the human centered methodology of design thinking. It emphasizes creating products, services and systems that by design, aiming to minimize waste and make the most of resources. The key principles of circular design thinking are; - Regenerative natural systems - keep products and materials in use - Design out waste and pollution - Think in systems Then benefits of circular design thinking which are - Environmental sustainability - Economic advantages - Social impact #SDG-AMP

Discussing the environmental benefits of using sustainable materials 🌳 I’ll break “sustainable materials” into 2 segments: 1. WHAT What qualifies something as “sustainable”? IE, what are the physical components of the product that make it better than a different product? When you understand the answer to this question, you better understand the benefits of using sustainable materials, Further reinforcing the positive benefits of sustainability. 2. WHEN WHEN is it appropriate to use/not use sustainable materials? What do you do when a sustainable material is a CHEAPER, less quality product? That’s a tough one. Moral comes into play there. In the past, we’ve used less sustainable materials (glues, etc) to complete a higher quality job. HOWEVER, we’ve found you can USUALLY find a comparable product that is more sustainavle. So we always recommend to DO YOUR RESEARCH! #olmlandscape #sustainability #sustainablelandscape #landscaping #hardscaping
