📣We are excited to announce the launch of Hergebruik Nu (Reuse Now Foundation), the Dutch association championing reusable packaging solutions. Launched by cupstack and already supported by Dutch Cups B.V., MEIKO Group, HOBART GmbH, PackBack Circulware and SwapBox as affiliates, Hergebruik Nu is ready to transform the way the Netherlands thinks about reusable packaging. This new platform will drive advocacy efforts and collaboration across the Netherlands for reuse businesses. 🇳🇱As of January 1, 2024, the Netherlands has banned disposable cups in offices, festivals, and on-site catering under the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive. Yet, with shifting political priorities leaving this policy unenforceable, the need for action is greater than ever. Hergebruik Nu will address these types of challenges, providing a unified voice to promote reuse and influence national sustainability policies. It aims to bring together customers, local governments (municipalities), and event organisers to champion sustainable reuse, helping create a cleaner county where both the economy and the environment benefit from reuse whenever possible. 💪Join Hergebruik Nu as a front-runner and lead the transition to a more sustainable packaging future and make reuse the norm in the Netherlands. Find out more here 👉 https://hergebruik.nu/ If your organisation is ready to take action or wants to learn more, reach out to info@hergebruik.nu. Together, we can shape the future of reusable packaging!

When The Coca-Cola Company saw that its aluminum cans and PET/rPET bottles sold at universities, sporting events, and concert venues often did not get recovered and recycled into new food-grade #packaging, the company set out to develop a closed-loop solution at select venues, where it validates, collects, processes, and returns its packaging as food-grade packaging for the beverage supply chain. As Jim Velky recounted at the Packaging Recycling Summit last month, the company didn't go it alone. Coke collaborated with Circular Solutions Advisors to create a value chain including MRFs and reclaimers to tap into and unlock recycled material supply that may have gone to landfill or the environment without intervention. How do you contribute as a consumer? Really think about the ways your family can contribute by making small changes to start. Do you bring your reusable cup to Starbucks? Do you recycle? Are you briningjng your plastic grocery bags back to the store drop-off or using reusable grocery bags? Consumers need to complete the action - manufacturers are focused on communicating the designation of where the product needs to go. Let’s do our part. 🙌🏻
Certain topics—like recyclability or reusability—we can’t tackle alone. By joining coalitions focused on consumer education, collaborating with foodservice operators, and participating in labeling systems like How2Recycle®, we support consumers and elevate the entire industry. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Bottle Reuse Network's 30th Anniversary in Japan. Many beverages sold in glass bottles in the B2B channel in Japan are in fact collected and reused, although the volume has decreased over the years. Pal Systems, the host of the event (a door-to-door online and offline grocery retailer) has incorporated a shared bottle into many of their liquid private brand products. The network consists of many stakeholders including bottle manufacturers, cleaners, contract packagers, retailers and manufacturers. Many have faced financial challenges over the years as single-use replaced re-use. But the members are all passionate advocates of circularity and are committed to bringing back re-use as a mainstream means of product delivery. Loop Japan has worked with many of these companies who have supported our platform (enabling brands to add reusable packaging to their product line-up) over the past several years. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan also presented at the event and expressed support for our endeavors. We discussed the need for government guidelines (potentially laws) to encourage companies to embrace reuse and reduce single use packaging. We hope Japan supports the efforts to achieve a global treaty to reduce plastic waste. 🎉It is Festival Season! This means drinking on high plastic frequency 🎧 🚯While cups offer convenience and practicality, their environmental impact is a growing concern. 🥛Cups are amongst the top litter items at festivals. Many festivals are now implementing initiatives to reduce cup waste, such as reusable cup programs and recycling efforts. What's the environmental impact of cups? For single-use cups, the primary environmental factors are: - 🥤material type: Recycled PET is generally better than other plastics. - ♻️recycling & collection rate: A robust circular system is crucial. 🇳🇱 Unfortunately, only about 50% of plastics are recycled in the Netherlands. Reusable cups have their own challenges: - 🗑️reusability and loss: Damaged or unreturned cups negate their benefits. - 🚿washing: This process consumes energy and water. 📉To minimize the environmental impact, reusable cups should: - Be used at least five times. - Be washed efficiently with high volume, low resource consumption (energy, water, detergent) If a reusable cup is used once only, then 90% of the CO2 goes to the material impact, while the CO2 eq (or GWP) is 3 times bigger than a single-use cup. 🔒Cups belongs to the event organizer ! Next time you order a drink, remember that cups can only be reused/recycled if returned at the bar or appropriate waste bin. They are not a souvenir... When evaluating options it is important to keep a systemic approach. As an LCA expert, there is no absolute winner... Reusable hard cup that is washed efficiently is less harmful to the environment than any recyclable soft cup. But if a festival fail to collect at least 75% of the cups put into the venue, then soft cups are a better option. And if 98% of the reusable cups are returned, and washed inefficiently then soft cups have a lower environmental impact. #environmentalimpact #lifeCycleAssessment #plasticpollution #circulareconomy #singleuse
