Another successful event was held by Stepping Stone Forests in Ireland at the St Ciaran's National School 🌳💚 Every child and teacher got an opportunity to participate where they planted native Irish species to support the widest range of biodiversity possible. The event also counted on the participation of the local community and their sponsor #AWSiNCommunities. Although the terrain was a bit muddy, the weather was kind and allowed for a wonderful day 🌱🎉

🌳🎤 This is one of the biggest challenge of our time: Restoring forests on a large scale while involving local communities. Today, there are 900 million hectares of land worldwide awaiting restoration, with 1/6 of them in Brazil. However, at the current pace, only 5% of the UN's restoration goal for 2030 will be achieved. THE QUESTION IS: "can we combine scale with co-benefits, benefiting both biodiversity and people?" I believe that high-quality restoration projects are the answer. These projects not only address the scale of the challenge but also bring benefits to both biodiversity and local communities. More than 1️⃣2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ people have already signed up for our upcoming webinar. It took us over 3 months to find the perfect speakers for this event, and I'm confident it will be worth it: 🌱 Cibele Santana, Treasurer for the Rede de Sementes do Cerrado (RSC), an organization driving change and inspiring conservation actions in the Cerrado region of Brazil. Her local perspective is invaluable. 💡 Bruno Gomes, with extensive experience in major projects and community relations. He understands the impact of these relationships firsthand. 🔬 Katherine Sinacore, a scientist who has conducted numerous studies on the subject. Her data-driven insights will be enlightening. 🌳 Emira Cherif, our Chief Scientific Officer at MORFO, known for her integrity and educational expertise. Thanks Jen Stebbing for moderating this online event. Your expertise in this field will enhance its accuracy even further. #NBS #nature #forest #forestrestoration

🐝Pollinator of the week: Furry Peat Hoverfly 🌼 Plant of the week: Wild Angelica ✅ Action of the week: Find out how community groups can help pollinators Pollinators are in decline on the island of Ireland, but our records show that local populations are increasing where actions are being taken to help them. This is often thanks to the hard work of dedicated local groups who are changing the way they manage their communities for the benefit of pollinators and people. There are many ways communities can help pollinators and biodiversity. Many actions are low-cost or free. From lawn-art competitions to neighbourhood pollinator pathways, dispersed urban orchards and bee gardens, to entering the Tidy Towns Local Authority Pollinator Award, find out how communities are helping create a landscape where pollinators can survive and thrive. The First of September is Wattle Day in Australia - Wattle being a common name for many species of Acacia 0ne, A. pycnantha, is Australia's official floral emblem.. its is also the first day of metrological spring (Autumn/Fall) for those who live in the Northern hemisphere. As with spring, Acacia flowering suggests renewal. and this year the Australian government is sponsoring a global #naturepositiveconference. Many NGOs (including #bioidverstyCouncil) are negative on the governments actions, pointing out the growing list of threatened species is not positive, and that more needs to be done. #Naturepositive is supposed to help focus minds on halting, even reversing, declines in global biodiversity. Simply put, such thoughts are fairy dust. In reality, solving the problem of negative biodiversity change is not simply about adding species to threatened species lists - its like Philately, satisfying for the collector but has no effect on the postal system. What is needed is not a continued documentation of disappearance, but a sharper focus on ecosystem approaches - in particular the Ecosystem Approach of the #convnetiononbiologicaldiversity. Yet governments, urged on by doubtless well-meaning but ineffective NGOs, still take comfort on compiling lists against which some legal sanctions could be applied - but rarely are. So on Wattle day let's rejoice in what we have, think in more holistic terms about how to manage, use, and conserve the Earth sustainably, and accentuate the positives - but maybe discard the nature positive term! And lets also make wattle day a global day to celebrate nature!

Today, we call on all of you to join us in an urgent mission to Save The Pacific Forest of Ecuador. Recognized as one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots on the planet, the survival of the Pacific Forest is vital for the well-being of biodiversity and humankind alike. Over the past 18 years, we have developed a truly innovative conservation model that halts deforestation in its tracks and restores what has been lost by working hand-in-hand with local communities. Today, we are ready to take our work to the next level by expanding our impact across the 40,000 hectare Capuchin Corridor. But we can't do it without your support. By contributing to our Save The Pacific Forest campaign, you can help us purchase and reforest more land and expand our economic and education programs to the nearly 40 local communities found within the Capuchin Corridor. Your support is critical to making this dream a reality. Together we can save this ecological treasure and demonstrate the power of community that will last generations. It’s International Day of Biodiversity! 🌍 Today, we celebrate the array of diverse Local and Indigenous communities working across the BirdLife Partnership, because without them we would not be able to protect and restore nature as successfully. 🤝🏽 By integrating our conservation science with traditional knowledge systems and practices we develop deeper understandings of species, habitats and ecosystems. 🌿 The UN theme for this year, ‘Be part of the Plan’ is a timely reflection of the importance of BirdLife’s partner-centred, civil society conservation model, where we work to ensure people and planet thrive together. Making liveable places in the CSGN involves improving access to quality greenspace for people, while restoring and creating habitats that help tackle the biodiversity crisis. Towards the end of last year, this project in Shotts Nature Park, supported by North Lanarkshire's Environmental Key Fund, delivered on both fronts. In our video, Green Action Trust's Louisa Maddison explains how the project evolved and increased wetland habitat to boost the park's biodiversity and improve people's connection to nature. #wetlands #biodiversity #greenspace
