Australia faces a persistent leadership challenge, not from a lack of capable leaders, but from systems and processes that entangle them in cycles of discussion and inaction. The time for policy debates and vague commitments has passed. Now is the time for decisive, tangible action. Our government leaders must prioritise engagement, evaluation, and procurement with a clear mandate to support 'genuine; Australian SMEs first and foremost, without exception. It is indefensible to perpetuate the narrative that local businesses are too small or lack the capability to deliver on critical government initiatives. The system, as it stands, is weighted against Australian SMEs, and this demands immediate rectification, not through more inquiries or soundbites, but through direct, results-driven action. When we have other nations active embracing Australian technology and companies, while our own leaders hesitate, it raises a difficult but necessary question. If Australian governments fail to champion their own businesses, why should Australian companies remain loyal to Australia? As someone deeply committed to an Australia-first approach, employing Australians and investing locally, it’s disheartening to see genuine opportunities for SMEs consistently overlooked. Our leaders must break the cycle and deliver real, measurable support for Australian innovation.

When the Council of Canadian Innovators | Conseil canadien des innovateurs started calling 2024 the Year of Procurement, we were thinking first and foremost about how government policy can better drive growth in the innovation economy. Our members know how valuable the government can be as a customer, and they know that other countries do it better. But we didn’t realize there would be so much action on the procurement file in the first few months of 2024! Here, CCI’s Director of Policy, Laurent Carbonneau, examines Innovative Solutions Canada and the #ArriveCan debacle. At CCI, we are searching for lessons about how the Government of Canada can improve procurement. This is a policy file that urgently needs attention. Simply imposing more rules and policies on the problem will not help. We need smarter solutions! https://lnkd.in/gSc4eR8m
