The speakers have been selected for KCDC 2024 and what a competitive year it has been! We want to share with you how we did the selection process. A thread: Selected speaker stats: 588 speakers submitted 1900 talks 30 volunteer track content evaluators 100+ hours evaluating 148 speakers accepted 180 talks scheduled 15 content tracks 27% female/non-binary 21% non-white minorities 17% traveling internationally 10% chance of selection KCDC runs blind evaluations with an evaluation committee of several people assigned to each track. This means your name is removed from your abstract and put up against 3 other randomized sessions in the track and the evaluator selects the session they'd want to see the most. The title and abstract are absolutely crucial here. An evaluator continues until they have all sessions ranked in the track. All evaluations are combined and ranked to establish an average score per track. Evaluators may provide comments to explain any nuance in their rankings. Sessions are finalized by the organizing team, respecting the ranking the evaluation committee did. Tracks have 6-15 slots based on trends and attendance. At this phase, speaker names are revealed on their session, with 30 sessions per page listed for the track (up to 10 pages!) Knowing individual speakers is important because it: A) Vets the qualifications of the speaker for the subject B) Ensures a speaker is not assigned too many talks C) Reveals if the talk was given before D) Allows intentional, diverse representation, geography, and experience So many excellent speakers this year, many of whom have joined us in the past - did not get accepted THIS TIME. Abstracts must rank high blindly to even make it to the first page, and if several speakers ranked high on the same subject matter, we had to only choose one. 440 speakers were not accepted. Two of our organizers discuss the process: https://t.ly/V7f3b If you didn't get selected this year, we assure you, that we want you to submit next year! The evaluation committee is different each time, and the industry needs different voices. Please come as an attendee for this year. It's your voice in the halls that makes this a community event worth putting on. ❤️ Congrats to our 2024 speakers - we'll see you in Kansas City in June! #kcdc2024

Tomorrow is #SeleniumConf and it forces me to think about who speaks from stage. It should not be only the people who submit talk proposals. It should not be only the people who caught committee's eye. Good conferences are designed, and that is why one of my monikers is #ConferenceDesigner. We design conferences as platforms for community and learning. We represent what the community is, and should be by budgeting representation from stage. For every topic we need to learn on, we could find options of whose voice teaches them this time around. Staging people is giving them power. And watching how that unfolds is a choice. Another choice is to step up to organize. Today I am feeling more brown people should have the stage, but as always, I look at it from a personal experiences point of view. Which is that I care but don't always have the time to turn it to actions.
