🌱 Exciting News: I've joined the Board of Directors at Green Wood Coalition! I'm happy to announce that I've been elected to the Board of Directors of Green Wood Coalition. This new role has me deep in thought about the most effective ways a board member can support a non-profit organization. With a background in design and strategy, I'm particularly drawn to resources for non-profits that propose different thinking or framing. I recently came across a great guide from 'Propel Non-Profits' that outlines a proactive approach for nonprofit leaders to consider their underlaying business model and use this thinking to prepare for market challenges. It emphasizes the importance of: 📊 Understanding the current operating model; 🔍 Diagnosing any critical weaknesses; 🚀 Forecasting and planning a structure to address these weaknesses effectively in the short and midterm; 💪 Implementing the necessary, though sometimes difficult, changes. This guide is a valuable resource for any nonprofit looking to sustain its mission and effectively serve the community. I'm excited to bring my expertise in innovation and design to the board, and to help guide our organization through these vital steps. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eSjERBT8 #NonProfitLeadership #BusinessStrategy #Innovation #BoardOfDirectors #GreenWoodCoalition

Nonprofit Resources offers strategy work for our clients, and also for external nonprofits seeking a new and better way to strategize and plan. I love facilitating sessions, and subscribe to the teachings of Lester Olmstead-Rose and David La Piana - who literally wrote the book on strategy and planning. Wandering through an airport bookstore years ago, I came across a book called The Nonprofit Strategy Revolution (link in comments below). It changed the way I think of strategy and planning, and has guided every session I've facilitated since. Strategy is not planning, and if your nonprofit is still handling these two pieces like the olden days (think 5 year plan with no quarterly accountability and ideas that fall into a black hole), we should talk. Or better yet; buy the book, and then we should talk! In my years of strategy work, I've come across some sad examples of super-expensive facilitators delivering skimpy value. it's almost criminal. Even if your nonprofit can afford an expensive facilitator, settling for the same session facilitated by the same consultant (just because that's what you've always done) doesn't cut it in today's fast-paced world. If you're going to spend the money to tackle strategy and planning, do it right. You should expect no less than the following: ✅ Pre-planning work sessions with leadership ✅ A copy of Nonprofit Strategy Revolution (courtesy of facilitator) ✅ Background work to determine stakeholder status ✅ Live facilitation that challenges assumptions and disrupts norms ✅ Working documents to track multi-year quarterly progress ✅ A final report to close out the session; with deliverable support documents Check out our 501(C)ast series on YouTube (link in comment below). Lester and I chatted about strategy, and a quick listen might inspire you to make the change. Contact me if you'd like a free consult on changing up your process!
