PORTUGAL: Algarve Marine Sciences Centre (CCMAR) announced in November 2024 that is making 8.5 million euros available to finance, over four years, research projects in aquaculture, fisheries, the environment, and blue biotechnology. The Algarve Marine Sciences Centre (CCMAR) has launched a groundbreaking initiative to fund €8.5 million in research over the next four years, focusing on aquaculture, fisheries, the environment, and blue biotechnology. This project will provide free access to Europe's leading research infrastructures and institutions, allowing both academic and industrial researchers to utilize state-of-the-art facilities across 40 institutions in 16 European countries, including the Baltic Sea, Northeast Atlantic, and Mediterranean regions. Through its AQUASERV initiative, the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) aims to enhance collaboration and innovation, contributing to EU policies like the Common Fisheries Policy and the Sustainable Blue Economy. The competition runs from November 15, 2024, to December 2028, offering researchers unique opportunities to explore various ecosystems, laboratories, and technological platforms. At Bioled Photoperiod, a global leader in photoperiod systems for aquaculture, we are committed to advancing the industry by contributing to and sharing scientific research from experts we admire. Today, we highlight an insightful study: "Using photoperiod cues to develop larger Atlantic salmon smolts (Salmo salar) and evaluate smolt window duration for aquaculture practices", by Rachael MacKinnon. This research reveals that while photoperiod manipulations had modest effects, all size groups (~200g, 700g, 1400g) showed excellent seawater tolerance with low mortality. Extending the freshwater phase to 2 or 3 months didn't further enhance smolt robustness compared to the industry standard of 1 month. The findings suggest that further investigation is needed to understand the effects of photoperiod on larger salmon's seawater performance.
