EX-AQUA is a 3-year Horizon Europe funded project aimed at supporting the National Institute for Marine Research and Development "Grigore Antipa" (NIMRD) in pioneering excellence in marine algae aquaculture. Acting as a catalyst in the Black Sea, the project enhances the competitiveness of the local value chain and fosters sustainable development in Romania. Funded by the European Union. 🌍EX-AQUA study visit in Ghent 🌊 Last week, the Ghent University team warmly welcomed Romanian partners, Dr. Florin Timofte and Oana Marin from the National Institute for Marine Research and Development "Grigore Antipa" (NIMRD) for an inspiring study visit. The event provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, foster collaboration, and explore new frontiers in sustainable aquaculture and marine science. ✍️Highlights of the visit included: 🔹 A visit to the Aquaculture Laboratory and Artemia Reference Center, where research facilities were observed and discussions were held regarding the controlled cultivation of macroalgae species Ulva, Palmaria, and Porphyra. 🔹Discussions on the organisation of a macroalgae laboratory where activities dedicated to macroalgae cultures will be carried out to support the development of this field on the Romanian Black Sea coast. 🔹Participation in the "Navigating Ecological Considerations and Sustainability in Mariculture Practices" symposium, Marifish, Ostend, alongside members of the Phycology Research Group. 🔹A visit to the VIB Center for Plant Systems Biology, where the hosts presented the latest research on the genetic analysis of green algae species Ulva. The information and experience gained during this visit will be integrated into our research and technology transfer activities. The aim is to contribute to the development of a solid knowledge base in the field of marine algae aquaculture and to support the implementation of innovative technologies in this sector in Romania.
