During day 2 parallel session 4 Ash Sheppard, from Modus Subsea Services, and Helge Overgaard Rørvik from Equinor, will present the implementation of Underwater Intervention Drones (UID) at Johan Sverdrup, the TRL4 journey: The challenge of balancing the energy transition with the critical need to secure the affordable supply of energy for billions of people worldwide requires a technology response. New technology, in the form of autonomous Underwater Intervention Drones (UIDs), are key to accelerating sustainable development, digitisation and automation of subsea operations. However, to enable the profound economic, environmental and quality benefits that are possible we must go further and operate these systems as resident. Follow the journey from a decision in the Johan Sverdrup license, to tendering with potential suppliers, contract award to Modus, significant technology maturation and testing, testing and more testing, resulting in TRL4 qualification of drone and Deepnet in 2024. The Johan Sverdrup UID pilot is the world first on several technologies and is the first time that wireless subsea communication is the only way to communicate between operator and UID. The UID is also remotely piloted from land, reducing the need for topside vessels. It is this eco-system that has the potential to remove up to 90% of cost from subsea IMR operations. In addition, the shift to data-centric asset integrity management has the potential to drive a paradigm shift in contracting and procurement models, in turn removing millions of dollars from legacy processes and creating efficient and sustainable energy solutions through advancements in subsea technology. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸: Yesterday brought a big #ThrowbackThursday moment for me: Two years ago, I had the honour of helping Hendrik Bußhoff and his incredible team launch AHTI, an innovation vessel designed to test maritime technologies in real-life environments. Yesterday at Schiff&Hafen | Ship&Offshore's Maritime 4.0 conference, it was fascinating to hear not only about further definitions of autonomous vessels and the challenges in their adoption, but to also see the tangible advancements in this field. For example, highly automated offshore vessels that are already in serial production! For me, the highlight was the comparison of two vessels built by VARD, ten years apart, with nearly the same functionality. Thanks to advanced automation, the newer vessel operates with a significantly smaller crew, shifting the remaining roles to land. As a result, Vard Electro managed to optimise the vessel to meet their customers' requirements with a substantial reduction in both gross tonnage and power consumption (and it's ammonia-ready). A massive #Kudos to Hendrik B. for his outstanding presentation.
