Hello #linkedinteachers I NEVER LIKED BEING TOLD WHAT TO DO Meet Gabriel, he hated the idea of being asked to take down notes in class. He found it tedious and pointless. His class teacher, Mr. Caleb was struggling to connect with him because he consistently pushed against instructions, questioning the relevance of materials and resist guidance. Hence, he rebelled against most teachers in school. He was punished severally, yet it seemed Gabriel became more difficult. One day, Mr. Caleb asked Gabriel to stay after class. He wanted to understand his perspective and find a way to engage him. Gabriel opened up by sharing his frustration with being told what to do and his desire for autonomy in learning. Mr. Caleb listened attentively and acknowledged Gabriel's feeling, validating his need for independence. He offered a compromise: Gabriel could choose his own topics and work at his own pace as long as he meets the learning objectives. He realised this trait can be channeled positively, making him take ownership of his learning, develop self motivation and discipline, become a critical thinker and a problem solver. He decided to start from his strengths to see how he can build other traits in him like submission and accountability. Gabriel was surprised by Mr. Caleb's willingness to listen and adapt. He began to take responsibility for his learning, producing high quality work and engaging in class discussions. Mr. Caleb provided the necessary support but gave him the space he needed to explore and learn independently. As the term progressed, Gabriel transformed from a reluctant learner to an enthusiastic participant. Their relationship grew from independence to collaborative built on mutual respect and trust. Mr. Caleb discovered that from embracing Gabriel's desire for autonomy, he was able to unlock his potential and create a more meaningful experience for him using his strength. Gabriel also understood having a listening and supportive teacher who understood his needs could make him learn and become an obedient boy. This made an entire difference in his academic pursuit. Schedule like clockwork: Set consistent meeting times that work for both you and your student. Short, regular sessions are better than long, infrequent ones. 2. Goals for the win: Talk to your student about their learning goals. Don't just focus on the immediate task, but encourage a broader understanding! 3. Uncover the mystery: Find out what your student already knows (and what they think they know that might be wrong!). Ask questions to get them thinking deeply. 4. Small steps, giant leaps: Break down learning into bite-sized chunks. Remember, it took you time to grasp these concepts too! 5. Challenge accepted! Tutoring should be supportive but also push students to think critically. Ask questions that gently challenge their thinking. 6. Keep it short and sweet: Explain things simply and avoid long lectures. 7. Positive vibes only: Focus on giving clear instructions rather than dwelling on what not to do. 8. Variety is the spice of learning: Mix up the tasks you use, keeping things interesting for both of you. 9. Open the door to thinking: Ask open-ended questions that can't be answered with a simple yes or no. Give students wait time to formulate their answers. 10. Empower through mistakes: When students make errors, don't just correct them. Ask questions to help them find the answer themselves. Learning from mistakes is key! 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 “𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗜 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀” 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁. When this student first came to me for coaching. He was an average student, barely scraping by with 50-60% in his board exams despite additional tutoring. From the very first day, he kept saying he didn’t like the subject and that he just needed to pass. I saw an opportunity here and enrolled him in one of our batches with about 12-15 students. When we began, he struggled with even the basics, like drawing up a simple journal. But as we progressed, something remarkable happened. By his 5th semester, he began answering difficult questions. Whether he got them right or wrong didn't really matter. The point was 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙨. The icing on the cake was that he passed all his subjects with a first division by the end of his 6th semester with zero backlogs. THIS was a great achievement for him AND FOR ME. 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨. Here’s what I believe worked: 𝟭. 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲. 𝟮. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗺. 𝟯.
