As an Executive Director of a nonprofit, recruiting and engaging volunteers is part of the daily work. But there's something transformative about stepping into a volunteer role myself as an advisory board member for the school district. It reminds me that no matter our titles or responsibilities, giving our time connects us to the heart of the mission. Volunteering grounds me in the values I champion, offering a fresh perspective on the challenges we face and the people we serve. It’s more than just asking others to join in—it’s about actively living out what we believe in. By rolling up our sleeves, we lead by example and show that our commitment goes beyond the boardroom.

❄️ VASP MEMBERS: Don't forget! ❄️ The monthly membership meeting for January is TOMORROW at 1:00 PM on Zoom. Check your email for more details and the Zoom link. This meeting will feature a presentation by VASP President Ashley Rieser, CVA on taking the next step in your career as a leader of volunteers and becoming certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA). Leaders in non-profit organizations and community groups increasingly understand that volunteers can be a critical resource for delivering on a mission. Effective people management and community engagement is imperative – whether they be paid or unpaid. As a result, employers expect that those individuals tasked with mobilizing and coordinating volunteer engagement demonstrate a thorough knowledge of effective practices and an understanding of how to apply that knowledge in support of real-world organizational priorities.

Innovative Community Engagement: Amplifying Overlooked Voices At BROOKS, we recently partnered with City of Parramatta to develop a Socio-Economic Inclusion Framework. A key challenge? Ensuring rough sleepers—often unheard in formal consultations—had their voices included. Through a thoughtful partnership with St Merkorious Charity, we hosted an event offering warm meals and safe spaces for dialogue. Tools like our “ideas wall” helped make engagement accessible, fostering trust and authentic connections. Adriana Pielak, Senior Engagement Practitioner at BROOKS, shared: "Food brings people together. It’s a universal bridge to connection—essential for meaningful community engagement." The result? Nearly 100 rough sleepers attended, many sharing their insights, shaping a more inclusive framework for the Council. 🔗 Learn more about our approach and the impact of authentic engagement in our full article: https://lnkd.in/eAXmg64f 👉 How do you connect with hard-to-reach communities? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Greatful to serve as the Board Chair for such an active and involved “community profit” company called Pro-Se Potential. One of our community outreach events was featured on the Back to Besa show with FOX news capture by the ever active Converge Media Team. Check it out in the link below. Our mission is to help our youth outperform their current environments. While we have a wide reach a majority of our children and families exist in King and Pierce Counties. If you want to get involved we have a Gala coming up November 2nd. Contact me for details. How do we heal a nation? Listen to the needs of the states. How do we heal the states? Listen to the needs of the counties And the counties? Listen to the needs of the cities And how do we heal the cities? Listen to the needs of the families. And how do we shape a better future? Listen to needs of the children and serve. https://lnkd.in/dgSxPkVX

To transform how your community engages with you and your work, consider listening before you act. In 2019 and 2020, Mission Partners served as the messaging and communications partner for NewsMatch—the largest grassroots fundraising campaign designed to support nonprofit news in the U.S. Through research, collaborative strategizing, and community listening, their fundraising goals exceeded the years prior despite the pandemic and politically charged attacks on the free press. What might your community be trying to tell you that could drive your mission to new heights? 🔹Read more about our work with NewsMatch: https://lnkd.in/eXWx4tAX 🔹Learn more about how Mission Partners can help you build community engagement: https://lnkd.in/e-p458pc

It's interesting to see what happens when you speak out. In this case, it’s an invitation via Tim Eby to join the board at the St. Louis Civic Pride Foundation and the honor that comes with serving. The Foundation is an education non-profit, part of Explore St. Louis, our local convention and tourism bureau. The mission: to energize St. Louisans to support their community. Here’s where I editorialize. This is an example of passion + need = opportunity. I'm passionate and vocal that each of us needs to SHOW UP to improve the cities we live in, for ourselves and the generations to come. And my home town, which has so much potential and resources, also has many challenges. Improving civic pride is one of dozens of things needed to address those challenges. Which leads to opportunty: when someone comes knocking, asking for help, in my experience you find a way to help. Bottom line: just say yes! I’m excited to join my fellow board members, roll up my sleeves and get to work!
