Key Takeaways from Dr. Kongkrapan Intarajang's Speech on ASEAN Energy Transition at the ASEAN Economic Outlook 2025 Forum: - Sustainable Energy Transition: CEO of PTT Public Company Limited, emphasized the crucial link between transitioning to cleaner energy and achieving sustainability across society, the economy, and the environment. - ASEAN's Economic Potential: With nearly 700 million people and contributing 6% of global GDP, ASEAN offers immense economic opportunities. The region's growing workforce and investment appeal underscore the need for a smooth transition to clean energy. - Current Energy Landscape: While renewable energy is rising, challenges persist with natural gas, oil, and coal. The decline of coal and oil due to high emissions makes natural gas essential for countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar. - Gas Dependency: Southeast Asia relies heavily on natural gas, with Thailand sourcing 50% from the Gulf of Thailand and importing the rest. A gradual transition to renewable energy sources like solar and wind is necessary. - Collaborative Resource Management: The Thai government is negotiating resource management in overlapping claims areas, leveraging past agreements with Malaysia to optimize resource use despite territorial challenges. - Carbon Emissions Reduction: PTT is committed to reducing emissions through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and hydrogen integration into industrial fuel mixes. - Net Zero Commitment by 2050: PTT aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, focusing on climate resilience, carbon-conscious asset optimization, and reforestation efforts. Dr. Kongkrapan's insights reflect PTT's proactive stance in navigating energy transition complexities while balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability in ASEAN. $ 1️⃣. 8️⃣ Trillion -- that's the record-breaking amount of money invested in the energy transition in 2023 according a recent BloombergNEF report, up by 17% from the previous year. For Southeast Asian countries, this is a huge opportunity as they aim for their energy transition goals. But to make this transition successful, we need engaging discussions and stories that empower it. In Indonesia, the focus on transitioning to clean energy has grown in the last 3 years. However, this shift faces challenges due to political barriers and limited public involvement. But there's hope, thanks to initiatives like Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy (CASE) Indonesia, led by GiZ and IESR. This initiative relies on scientific evidence to push for clean energy, aligning with Indonesia's 2030 target outlined in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Catalyze has collaborated with CASE Indonesia to tailor messages on the energy transition for policymakers, NGOs, and the media. Our goal is to promote evidence-based discussions on clean energy, emphasizing the importance of credible spokespeople and diverse voices to spread messages effectively. For more details, check out the Narrative Trends in Energy Transition report released by CASE Indonesia in October 2023 (https://lnkd.in/gbVk8AjQ). Your #IAPWeeklyRead 🎯 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) encompass a range of typologies, including industrial parks, free ports and urban enterprise zones. Still, they all have one feature in common: a territorially demarcated area that provides incentives for capital and trade, promoting investment, job creation and improved livelihoods. There are more than 7,000 SEZs globally, supporting industries that contribute to local and national economies. Nevertheless, their impacts in developing countries tend to be localized and limited, performing only as well as the country average in terms of economic growth, and having little effect on their host territories. But in this new era of cleantech and rapid technological expansion, developing countries may benefit from a new generation of SEZs that take advantage of the energy transition and advanced technologies. In their latest UNIDO IAP piece, Marco Kamiya, Stefan Kratzsch and Salil Dutt delve into how green growth propelled by energy transition and frontier technologies creates opportunities for developing countries. I'm happy to share our new paper on: "Breaking the #carbon lock-in: Identifying pathways for #Malaysia towards a #low-carbon #future." out now in Technological Forecasting and Social Change. https://lnkd.in/eVb63n_y The #ParisAgreement requires countries to break away from carbon lock-in, a particular challenge for traditional oil and gas producers. How can these countries overcome path-dependencies to shift from a fossil fuel heavy system to one relying on renewable energy? #Malaysia epitomizes this challenge: the country is the second-largest oil producer in Southeast Asia whilst the fossil fuel energy sector takes up nearly 80 % of GHG emissions, with coal energy occupying the largest share. To identify leverage points of energy transitions, we model the structural components influencing the Malaysian energy system and assess the dynamics of interrelating factors. Based on stakeholders' input, we identify main factors influencing Malaysia's energy transition, explore their interactions, and use Cross Impact Balances (CIB) to create scenarios. The paper presents we model structural components that influence the Malaysian energy sector. Using cross impact balance (CIB), a formal foresight technique, and performing succession analysis, we identify leverage points that enable Malaysia to pursue a successful Hashtag #energytransition. We find that redirecting the fiscal stimulus through COVID-19 recovery packages towards green growth would an important instrument for change. More importantly, however, Malaysia needs to move away from state-centred to a more market coordinated economy. This shift would unlock the Malaysian energy system by breaking well-established path-dependencies, thus enabling the green recovery packages to unfold their full potential. Whilst focused on Malaysia, the findings contribute more generally to our understanding how fossil fuel reliant emerging economies can break path-dependencies inhibiting the clean energy transition. The paper is based on #transdisciplinary research in an amazing international team. We thank the #MakeOurPlanetGreatAgain funding scheme. It was a truly international effort, led by the great Esther Schuch, PhD, and involves a team of scholars from the Asia School of Business, Forschungsinstitut für Nachhaltigkeit (RIFS) and Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at the University of Erfurt. Andreas C. Goldthau Renato Lima de Oliveira Silvia Weko Jude H. Kurniawan, PhD. I truly enjoyed the process, and I look forward to our next project!

In 2025, Malaysia will assume the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), 10 years after its previous tenure. As many ASEAN countries have committed to net zero targets, including Malaysia with its National Energy Transition Roadmap, there is a significant need for investment to realise these ambitions. In this regard, Malaysia can play a role to amplify the proposition of the region as a hub for green investments. Under the patronage of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), CETA is the prime platform for key players looking to connect with policy decision makers and invest in the region's net-zero initiatives. #Greenenergy is indeed the business of all. By working together, governments, businesses, financial institutions, civil society, individuals, educational institutions, and the international community can create a sustainable energy future. This collective effort is crucial for mitigating climate change, ensuring energy security, and achieving #sustainabledevelopmentgoals. The transition to green energy is not just an environmental imperative but a shared responsibility that promises a brighter, more sustainable future for all. The transition to green energy is a critical endeavor that requires the involvement and commitment of every sector of society. It is not just a matter for governments or environmentalists but a collective responsibility that encompasses individuals, businesses, financial institutions, and civil society. Indonesia is gearing up to be a green energy power in the world. The new city of Nunsantara will be located on the island of Borneo, the world’s third-largest island, shared with the countries of Malaysia and Brunei. The city will run on renewable energy as per reports. I had a very meaningful meeting with Erry Herjuno and team in the Indonesian Embassy in India. Indonesia's plan for renewable energy production and usage especially for #wind, #solar, #greenhydrogen and #CHP are highly promising, largely considering the importance of the new capital city #Nunsantara. Together with all like minded countries the challenge to face #climatechange and #globalwarming can be handled better in order to provide a better environment for our future generation.
