Larisa Cătălina Ionescu: In almost every public discussion, the fragility of Romanian democracy is a recurring subject. This concern has become even more pressing during the current period of political uncertainty, where the rise of far-right parties is often blamed on traditional political forces that have distanced themselves from the needs and concerns of the people. While I agree that this explanation holds some truth, I believe it is only part of the picture. A deeper issue lies in the inability of democratic institutions to build the resilience needed to safeguard democracy. I believe this failure partly originates from their gradual withdrawal from a vital role: engaging with and educating citizens about the values, principles, and benefits of democratic governance. When democratic institutions fail to engage with the public and foster trust, they leave a void that can be exploited by extreme ideologies and political movements. This article revisits an essential but often overlooked topic: the legitimacy of constitutional courts and their critical role in ensuring the resilience of democracy. In a rapidly changing world, where societal trends and political dynamics evolve unpredictably, understanding the impact of constitutional courts on public trust and democratic stability is more important than ever. https://lnkd.in/dsjTV2KX

#USElections🇺🇸 in the #UnitedStates🇺🇸 are complex and often prolonged, especially in polarized contexts. Results are usually tight, which can delay the determination of a definitive winner, particularly with high turnout of mail-in votes and in key states. It is common for there to be counts, recounts, and legal disputes that extend the process. If #DonaldTrump does not win clearly, it is expected that the result will be very close and that the losing party will contest it, which could lead to final results not being known for #weeks or #months. This creates an #atmosphere of #uncertainty that affects both #domestic #politics and the #international perception of the #electoral #process in the #US🇺🇸 #Election2024 #Trump #Kamala #ElectionDay #USElection2024 #USAElection2024

Justice can indeed be a fundamental lever to combat rising polarisation and declining trust in our societies. Thanks to the OECD - OCDE Public Governance Directorate for inviting the Ministerio de la Presidencia, Justicia y Relaciones con las Cortes to discuss on how to enhance social dialogue and consensus, and engage people to our institutions and justice systems.
🌐OECD Global Forum on Building Trust and Reinforcing Democracy 🌐 ⚖️ Earlier this week, at the OECD Global Forum on Building Trust and Reinforcing Democracy in Milan, we hosted an in-depth discussion session on: The New Frontier of Democracy and Prosperity: Promoting the Rule of Law by Providing Access to Justice for All 🗣️ The speakers discussed how the justice sector can help reinforce democracy and build trust, through people-centred justice and delivering on the promise of the rule of law. The exchange built on the insights and discussions from the 2024 OECD Roundtable on Equal Access to Justice, held two weeks ago in Ottawa. 🙏 Thank you to our speakers and participants for making the event a success! #ReinforcingDemocracy #RuleofLaw #A2J #AccesstoJustice
