Fabiana Mangano’s Post

🚀 We have successfully completed the Alta Scuola Politecnica (ASP) program!🎓 The Alta Scuola Politecnica (ASP), established as a joint venture between Politecnico di Torino and Politecnico di Milano, is an honors program for high-achieving students who are passionate about innovation and eager to develop their potential within a multidisciplinary community. As part of this incredible journey, our team worked on an exciting project in collaboration with COREPLA - Consorzio Nazionale per la Raccolta, il Riciclo e il Recupero degli Imballaggi in Plastica, SERUSO S.P.A. and Jaipur Robotics | Techstars '24. 📝About our project (IPSE): The aim of the IPSE project was to enhance the efficiency of plastic waste sorting through the integration of artificial intelligence and eco-design. We focused on improving the detection of impurities on sorting conveyor belts at sorting facilities. Current sorting systems rely on both automated technologies, primarily Near Infrared (NIR), and manual labor. However, manual sorting is labor-intensive and prone to errors. Our solution integrates cameras and advanced machine learning algorithms to enhance detection accuracy and automate the sorting process, tested at Seruso's facility. This innovation aims to optimize workforce distribution, reduce errors, and increase the purity of sorted plastic flows, which is crucial for meeting the EU 2030 recycling targets. The system is projected to reduce costs while supporting a circular economy by boosting efficiency and sustainability in plastic recycling. 👥 About my team: - Fabiana Mangano, Chemical Engineer, Politecnico di Torino - Alberto Foresti Data Scientist, Politecnico di Torino - Marco Persico Automation Engineer, Politecnico di Milano - Leonardo Pesce AI Engineer, Politecnico di Milano - Simone Clemente, Data Scientist, Politecnico di Torino 🙏 A heartfelt thank you to all those who supported us along the way: Professor Giacomo Boracchi and Mario Grosso (Politecnico di Milano), research assistants Gaia Brussa and Andrea Marelli (Politecnico di Milano), and our collaborators Nikhil Prakash and Ermes Zamboni (WiSort). This project would not have been possible without your invaluable guidance and collaboration. 🌍 #innovation #plasticrecycling #artificialintelligence #ecodesign #circularEconomy #ASP #PoliTo #PoliMi #recyclingefficiency
