🔥🍞Hot and fresh out of the oven! 😊 Excited to share our latest research on the #resilience_of_wind_turbines under earthquake, wind, and wave loads, incorporating soil-structure interaction. This work, just published in #Earthquake_Engineering_and_Structural_Dynamics (a Wiley Journal), is the result of a fantastic collaboration between our University of Technology Sydney team (including PhD candidate Nadeem Fairley and myself) and the Arup -Sydney team (Dr Aslan S. HOKMABADI). Well done team. Key takeaways for industry: 1️⃣ Transition pieces with larger cone angles significantly improve stress distribution and grout durability under combined earthquake, wind, and wave loads. 2️⃣ Current design codes underestimate grout stresses in conical transition piece designs, emphasising the need for guideline updates. 3️⃣ Enhanced design can strengthen renewable energy systems, ensuring minimal disruptions in earthquake-prone regions. “Climate-resilient design goes beyond the turbulence modelling that is done efficiently in wind tunnels,” says Dr. Girma Bitsuamlak, director of Western’s WindEEE Research Institute. “It’s a multi-physics problem.” This is precisely the type of problem that can only be investigated through computer simulations requiring vast amounts of data storage and processing power -- resources available to Ontario researchers through Ontario's publicly funded digital research infrastructure (DRI). “The point is to help communities prepare for and adapt to extreme weather and to develop sustainable approaches to building design,” Dr. Bitsuamlak says. “How can we improve design for new buildings or retrofit older buildings to be safe, resilient and energy-efficient?” Read more about WindEEE and many other examples of the valuable work being done by Ontario researchers, supported by Ontario's shared DRI platform. https://lnkd.in/gnzKiXHg
