For example, platforms like Coursera and Khan Academy use AI algorithms to suggest content based on students' past performance, helping them to focus on areas where they need the most improvement. 2. Subject Planning and Assessment Tools: AI can empower students to plan their study schedules and assessments more effectively. These tools can predict the time needed for different subjects, suggest optimal study plans, and even provide practice exams tailored to students' abilities. When was the last time you learnt from an expert? How did it go? Learning from an expert can elevate an educational experience to an extraordinary level. Imagine studying theoretical physics under the tutelage of Albert Einstein, whose revolutionary theories of relativity transformed our understanding of time and space. The opportunity to gain insights from his visionary approach and firsthand experiences would be invaluable. Or would it? While learning from experts has its benefits, it also comes with challenges. Experts might skip crucial foundational steps, assuming they are widely known, which can confuse beginners trying to grasp basic concepts before tackling advanced applications. Additionally, their deep familiarity with the subject may make it hard for them to simplify complex ideas for novices, potentially leading to an overwhelming rather than enlightening learning experience. In top-down learning, the teacher, who is typically an expert, imparts knowledge starting from the highest level of conceptual hierarchy. This could include broad principles that give a wide perspective on the subject. The learner is then expected to fill in the lower-level details progressively, which can be challenging without sufficient foundational knowledge. A top-down teacher is like a swim instructor who starts by taking a learner directly into the deep end of the pool to demonstrate and target advanced techniques. In bottom-up learning, students begin by mastering small, discrete units of information or skills, which are seen as the building blocks of more comprehensive knowledge. This approach is especially beneficial for beginners, as it ensures that they develop a solid understanding of the fundamentals, which are critical for grasping more advanced topics. 🚨A don’t-miss paper🚨A framework for inclusive AI learning design-2024 ⚠️As educators we have been dealing with a challenge! ⁉️How to design an accessible and engaging learning experience with/on AI that ☑️resonate with diverse learners, ☑️enable all to reach deeper levels of understanding, ☑️and empower them with practical knowledge and skills ✅There is a new UDL-grounded framework for that! 🟢 the framework has the "AI Five Big Ideas" at its core, supported by the three UDL principles of ☑️Engagement (the "why"), ☑️Representation (the "what"), ☑️and Action & Expression (the "how"). ❇️The three "praxes" under each UDL principle provide concrete examples of teaching strategies with/on AI that align with that principle! ❇️For example, the engagement principle includes methods such as project-based learning to promote authenticity, collaborative tasks, and self/peer assessments! ⚠️In my view, we can also consider the following ways for more accessible, engaging and inclusive learning experiences: ✅Meaningful learning & personal connection: How about incorporating learner-centered projects that mirror our students' lives? wouldn't it make the concept or use of AI more meaningful? ✅Authentic engagement: when students apply a concept (i.e., AI) to the issues they really care about, they get more engaged!
