Unveiling the Power of Emotional and Cognitive Engagement in Online Learning: A Breakthrough Study on Predicting Learning Achievement in MOOC Discussions In this paper, Sannyuya et al. (2002) focused on the automatic identification of emotional and cognitive engagement in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to predict learning engagement and performance. For this, they used a sample of 8867 participants registered in an online class of Introduction to Psychology between February and May 2020 in China and collected the responses of the learners’ discussion posts in a database. Then, they employed an advanced text classification algorithm called BERT-CNN to examine and classify emotional and cognitive engagement inside the conversations. The methods included phases for data collecting, natural language processing, coding scheme construction, model training, and data analysis. As a result, this model proved to be more effective at capturing subtle language characteristics linked to emotional and cognitive engagement. Also, the findings demonstrated unique language patterns that distinguish emotional and cognitive engagement and showed the intricate link between the two types of involvement. While cognitive engagement was linked to the combined usage of many word classes, such as nouns, pronouns, and verbs, emotional engagement was shown to mostly rely on emotional keywords, such as adjectives and adverbs. Additionally, the study looked at how learning performance in MOOCs was affected by these. Higher levels of involvement and active participation in forum discussions were associated with higher learning outcomes for learners. Overall, with these results the research unveils a new understanding on how to predict learning achievement and engagement in online courses. The study's implications encompass improving student engagement, retention of knowledge, and overall quality of learning in digital learning settings. Finally, educators and curriculum designers may be able to further improve their techniques to encourage both cognitive and emotional engagement in the students.
