Many of us may remember, the riotous booze parties that the 90s college campuses were known for. Today the same has spilled over to fancy night clubs and watering holes. In either of the cases , alcohol is seen as the vehicle for bonding. It became an enabler for conversations . And it created stories that run along as connecting conversations for years. Over the years spirits followed this generation to become a part of the corporate culture and act as a partner in aiding many a business deal. But the one day that beats every single day of the year is 31st Dec . Alcohol is often associated with celebrations and social gatherings. New Year's Eve is a major global celebration, and many people view alcohol as a way to enhance the festive atmosphere. It also acts as a Social Lubricant. Alcohol can lower inhibitions and make people feel more social and outgoing. This can be appealing on New Year's Eve, as people often want to connect with others and have a good time. This year in India , tipplers gulped down 3.4 lakh litres of liquor on New Year’s eve around 14% more than the nearly 3 lakh litres consumed on Dec 31st 2023. Around 82,000 litres of beer was consumed on the day, up by 9.3% from 75,000 litres sold in 2023. A very interesting trend emerges from a post by Jatin Modi (https://lnkd.in/dzcBScze). He says the trend seems quite different with the new generation in the west-   A decade ago, ordering a non-alcoholic drink at a business dinner meant awkward explanations. Now, the younger team members reach for Heineken 0.0 without a second thought. But a generation isn't just changing what they drink. They're changing why they gather, how they bond, what they seek in collective experiences. Happy New Year! 🎉 Now, I know today kicks off all the “new year, new me” vibes with the walk 10,000 steps a day, drink more water, declutter everything but one thing that really matters to me is Dry January🍹 I’ve been alcohol-free for five years now, infact today is my 6th year sobervesary and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. No more waking up with headaches, hangxiety, feeling “off” for days, or wasting money (the amount I have saved over the years is insane) it’s been a revelation. But it’s also made me notice how much of our industry (and the world quite frankly) still revolves around alcohol. As we step into a new year, I’d love to see the events industry rethink and take more seriously how we create inclusive spaces that cater to everyone, regardless of whether they drink or not. How can we plan for 2025 and beyond- Here are a couple of questions that can spark some fresh thinking for 2025 because the “events = drinking” formula needs a little shake-up. 1️⃣ Are we offering high-quality alcohol-free drink options that feel just as special as their alcoholic counterparts? 2️⃣ How can we collaborate with venues and suppliers to make alcohol-free choices more cost-effective and accessible? 3️⃣ Are networking opportunities always centered around alcohol, or can we offer alternatives that make everyone feel welcome? Who’s ready to shake things up? Let’s raise a non-alcoholic glass to a 2025 filled with more inclusive spaces!
