🌟 Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together    As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and reflect on this year's theme, “Pioneers of Change,” I am inspired by the countless Latino leaders who have forged new paths and advocated for a more equitable society. Our community's contributions extend far beyond our cultural heritage—we are innovators, educators, advocates, and changemakers across every industry.    This theme resonates deeply with me, both personally and professionally. My identity as a Spanish-Latino-American has shown me the strength and resilience of underserved communities, but it has also made me keenly aware of the significant disparities in healthcare access and quality that many in these communities continue to face.    🚨 Healthcare should not be a privilege dictated by ZIP code, ethnicity, or income level. Yet, millions of Americans, particularly in Hispanic and other minority communities, encounter barriers that prevent them from receiving the care they need and deserve.    At Adhera Health, we are dedicated to changing this reality. We are harnessing the power of digital health technology to dismantle these barriers and deliver innovative, human-centered solutions that prioritize inclusion and accessibility. Our mission is simple: to make healthcare more inclusive, more accessible, and more empathetic—no matter who you are or where you live.    I’m incredibly proud of our diverse team, who not only bring exceptional talent but also a shared passion for making healthcare more equitable for underserved populations. It's National Minority Health Month! I was able to work this morning while virtually tuning into the FDA’s OMHHE panel discussion on ‘Strategies to Increase Clinical Trial Participation for Diverse Communities, and I must say that my cup is full.’ The discussion not only shed light on the challenges and barriers amongst various communities, but the panelist also proposed solutions for enhancing community participation in research. Sharing some of the key points that resonated with me in hopes that they resonate with you and your work as well: ·      We need to bring clinical trials to the community and establish local sites that are convenient and staffed by individuals who culturally and linguistically align with the community. ·      Panelists stated that many of their patients and community members said that they would 100% participate, however they are not being asked. We need to reach out more proactively and make sure everyone knows they are invited to join. ·      We need to improve our communication by stripping away the intimidating jargon that often alienates rather than informs. It’s important to make communication heartfelt and comprehensible, while also training our research staff and investigators to do the same. ·      The panelist represented many different cultures and races, however the most common theme amongst all the cultures were trust. We talked about the importance of being open about how participants data is used and ensuring they remain informed long after the trials conclude. ·      Lasty, our focus should also be on cultivating lasting relationships. The power of building genuine, bi-directional relationships with communities was emphasized as essential for meaningful and sustained engagement. Today's panel reinforced that true commitment to making clinical trials more accessible, ethical, and effective involves more than just temporary initiatives and requires a persistent, collaborative effort. This week, I had the privilege of moderating the inaugural Blacks at Microsoft, Health & Life Sciences group (BAM-HLS) MedTalk; Empowering Women's Health: Bridging Technology and Equity. The session focused on critical issues in Women's Health and the role of technology in bridging healthcare gaps. Our distinguished panelists, Dr. Ashlee Jamieson, Dr. Dakisha Lewis, MD, FACOG, and Dr. Nichole Butler-Mooyoung, FACOG, shared invaluable insights from the frontlines of women's healthcare. Key Takeaways: Access and Equity: Dr. Jamieson highlighted the importance of providing equitable healthcare access, especially for Black women, and leveraging AI to bridge gaps in care. Patient Advocacy: Dr. Lewis emphasized the need for patient education and advocacy, ensuring that women can demand quality care and understand their health conditions. Technology's Role: Dr. Butler discussed how technology can empower patients by providing accessible information and fostering better communication between doctors and patients. I want to propose a different, proactive approach to the recent US election results: It's time to channel our energy into action. The election outcome is set. There is no going back. Now, our focus must shift to securing a seat at the table and ensuring women's health and rights receive the attention they deserve. Let’s be clear: No one else can or will step up for us. It’s up to the FemTech community to lead this charge. We have the expertise, the passion, and the stakes in this fight. We must strategically position women's health as a priority for the incoming administration. The Republican Party and Trump have recognized the unpopularity of their stance on Roe v. Wade. Let's leverage this to our advantage – they need to demonstrate support for women's health. The U.S. remains the largest market for FemTech innovation. Disengaging in resentment now will only further hinder our chances of securing NIH or VC funding, influencing policies, and ultimately raising the standard of care when women need solutions and support more than ever. Let's unite, strategise, and advocate for women's health with the vigour it deserves. Together, through action, even if it’s with your nose pinched, we can shape policies, and improve healthcare outcomes for women across the nation, and ultimately the world. Most med-tech and bio-tech innovation comes from the U.S. We must push forward, not just for American women, but for the good of women and AFAB individuals everywhere, who depend on the scientific advancements here. This is not the time to hold still, hold back and just take it. It’s time to rise and make our voices heard. Who's ready to join this crucial effort?
