Polo goes back to before the 12th century. Saladin played polo because, back in the day, polo, also known as “chovgan” or “naiza bazi” was practiced as it was the closest thing to a battlefield. I started playing polo with my friend Tariq Al Habtoor.
Now, polo is a sport that includes 4 players on each team. They are all on horseback, and the game is played on a field the size of 9 football fields. The goal is to put the ball between the goalposts, which are 24 feet apart. A period in polo is called a chukker, and there are 6 chukkers in a game, each lasting 7.5 minutes. You change horses mid-chukker, kind of like an F1 pit stop. When your horse loses steam, you run to the sidelines, jump on a fresh horse, and continue playing – they don’t stop the game for it. The strategy is to let the horse recover so I can bring my good horse back later to compete again.
What polo teaches you is strategy and team building. In this picture, I have my friend Tariq Al Habtoor, a very well-rounded polo player, and my friend Hassan Alhjohani, who has the biggest YouTube channel for horses in the world. And the horse I am riding Aladham means black.
I might not be the smartest person in the room but my teammates are.
